I remember Allen Day posting about a Rem. action that he had Penrod overhaul with the Win. type safety etc.
Wondering if it's the same action on the Rem. 280, Penrod/Simillion at Hallowells.

I just got off the phone with Mark and am in the process of boxing up an action and barrel to send his way to arrange a build. What an incredibly nice guy. He couldn't be easier to work with and I can't wait to get this action and stuff in his hands to get him started on my build. Cool. Have you received the rifle yet? Any feedback worthwhile to share?

Nice to see Gene's name come up. He built a matched pair of 30-06's for my son and me and I kicked off a build recently for a .375. My 30-06 has done two trips to africa and its a great rifle. He is a great guy, total straight shooter.

Hallowell & Co. Has had a couple of Penrod M70's and a Penrod-Simillion 700 sitting in their inventory for a while. I have some work done by Mark and these would be turnkey perfection for a buyer. Hallowell &Co. Looks like the Penrod/Simillion 280 is still for sale: http://www.hallowellco.com/mark_penrod%20+%20Gene%20Simillion%20Custom%20Remington%20700.htm

I saw the P64 Alaskan on there. That’s a beauty. My favorite factory made rifle...

Gene does not have a website that I am aware of. As a general estimate, a synthetic stocked rifle will run between $7,500 and $10,000 (depending on the options, caliber, etc.), with the customer supplying the action. A wood stocked rifle is right around $15,000 or so.

Oddly coincidental that this should get bumped. I stumbled upon it recently while looking for some information on Penrod, and was astounded by the overall quality of the thread - in terms of content and contributors both. The wisdom contained in many of the posts - some from folks who are sadly either no longer with us, or simply no longer post - is tremendous. An absolute gem of a thread; probably one of the best I have read here on the campfire in a long time.

Not sure how to post a photo, but its an early G series (first 200,000) M70 action, with a 23" bartlein barrel in an echols stock. Bolt and bolt stop both engraved.
About 9lbs/9.5 with a swaro z6i 1.7-10x42 and I have a swaro z3 with mounts to replace the larger swaro if I'm planning on a lot of walking. Could have dropped more weight by swapping out the blackburn bottom metal with aluminum but was not too worried about it.
One thing I did a bit differently is no iron sights.
Shoots 250TTSX into clover leafs with load developed by Gene and factory 300 Grain sub moa.
Took it to the Kalahari this year and after tracking him for two days, got a beautiful big bull eland with it.
As many on the hide have noted, a far less expensive rifle would get the job done but I decided a while back to thin the herd and have fun building some customs that I will eventually give to my kids.
