What is you guys’ favorite 223 bullet for shooting pigs? Mine is generally whatever is in the magazine of the truck gun when I see them of course. But lately I’ve been trying some different bullets that I’ve heard great things about on the fire and I’m not really seeing the results I was expecting. I’ve been using the 55gr Hornady SP and the 53gr TSX. The TSX obviously works but seems to blow through without much blood left behind and a small exit.

The Hornady on the other hand I’m not sure about. I shot a couple pigs with it a few weeks back and knocked them down only to have them immediately bounce up and peel out. Not much blood and I didn’t look real hard for them down in the thick brush. Shot another one and managed to get three good solid hits in her with the third breaking her back. When I peeled the hide back to grab the loins I found one of the bullets in the shoulder fully expanded with no core.

I don’t really give a hoot as I’ll shoot a pig with anything I have on hand when I see him but I seem to be getting quicker kills with plain old IMI 55gr ball ammo than I have been using “hunting” bullets. I’m shooting them out of a 16” AR so velocity is down I’m sure. But I love the little gun, never know when you’re going to kick up 2 dozen of the rooting bastards and need the firepower. I generally try to earhole the first one while they’re standing still and then just shoot the runners in the front half.

Really just curious as to everyone else’s favorites. I have some 55gr Speers and Ballistic Tips I might try next.

I'm trying the Sierra 65 grain Gameking based on recommendations of several friends in Texas that use them on hogs and deer.

Haven't had the chance to try it for myself, but a friend's 7 year old used one I loaded to great effect on a big doe last November. Shot her quartering to him at the shoulder neck junction and it exited behind the opposite shoulder.

The kids and I have shot a bunch, a couple pushing 250-300#, with the 62 grain TTSX out of a 9 twist savage. Can't think of any that I've had run off. I shot one 3 times that was being run by dogs, but don't think I really needed to. Can't really speak on a blood trail, as almost all have fell right there.

Yep, these work quite well, as do the 60gr npt,for both hogs and deer. A friend gone down to Texas has been using one or the other for a good amount of time now.

I have shot an absolute truckload of them with the 64 grain Win. Powerpoint. They work well for me. My tube is 20" but I don't think that makes that much difference.

65gr Sierra Gamekings or 77gr Sierra Tipped Matchkings.
I started out using 75gr PPU Match bullets and they worked very good. Ran out of them and went to the Game kings, then TMKs. Ive tried speer gold dots 62 and 64 gr and had good results too.

Had pretty good luck using the M193 55 grain ball but switched to a 6.5 Grendel upper. Seems a much better round for hog hunting.

I have some 75 BTHP Hornadys and 40 and 53 Vmaxes might try some of those too. I just was curious as to what you guys were using. Strangely I’ve had pretty good luck with 40gr tipped Varmeggedons even with shoulder shots.

Nosler 64 grain bonded solid base. Used them on a recent hunt in Georgia, great performance on big pigs.

The Midway Dogtown 55 SP is a pretty tough bullet. I’ve killed a pile of hogs with them.

Another vote for the 62gr Federal Fusions from Rocky Mountain Reloading.

24.7gr TAC or
25.5gr of CFE-223 or
25.5gr Varget

CCI BR-4 primers.

Add me to the 64gr Bonded Solid Base, though the 60 partition does the job quite well also.
