I know a guy that has a pair of pre '64 Super Grade model 70's that both of them are in nearly identical condition and that being around 95%. One is a Hornet the other a Swift. If you could only afford one of them which one would you choose? I know that is a personal question, so let me rephrase it this way, which one would be the better investment? Not sure, but I think Winchester may have made a few more Hornets than Swifts. Don't know if that would have any bearing on it or not. While we are at it, what would be a fair price to both parties, not Blue Book, but real world prices. Thanks for participating. RRM

I’d take the Hornet, but I’m a shooter not a collector.

I think the Hornet would likely have more collector value but the Swift would make a nice hunting rifle.

I would definitely go with the Swift...when you burn that barrel out you have an action for something else.

IMO the Hornet, I have seen a lot less Hornets than Swifts, but even if there were more Hornets were made it is doubtful that many of them remain in original condition, a great many of them were converted to 222 Rem when it came out.
If you plan on shooting them it is near impossible to wear out a Hornet barrel but a Swift can be shot out fairly quickly. Besides that the Hornet is just fun to shoot.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

drover, I understand but for myself.... I've never known anyone who had or ever had a 220 Swift. I also know that I would not shoot out a barrel on the Swift.

EITHER would be great catch.

I'd go with the Swift, because I dearly love mine. And, as long as you keep it clean and don't shoot it till the barrel gets scalding hot, it should last a good, long time.

I'd grab the Hornet and never look back. Not that there's anything wrong with the Swift, but I can do anything with a .22/250 that I could do with a Swift, and with cheaper brass and a fuzz less powder. I'm a shooter foremost, and that doggoned Swift is pretty tough on barrels in a PD patch.

Besides, I like the Hornet heaps.

Ther is a love of the hornet that can't be explained...you would think the hot rod 22 cf would get more love but tiny one does...

In pre 64's I have two Hornets both std grades and two Swifts one a Super Grade. If they are both equal in condition then it's a toss up as to which you like the best. I think in the real world the Hornet might bring a tad more money value wise but not that much. FWIW I have been offered $5K for my Swift. I wouldn't worry about the barrel in the Swift under normal use.

This in spades. I can't imagine having a fine rifle and not shooting the heck out of it, an what better to shoot the heck out of than a hornet?

Kinda what I'd do.. or get rid of something in the gun cabinet to purchase both...

off topic tho, I'd love to find one in that good of shape, with a shot out 22 Hornet barrel...

I think a pre 64 rebarreled to 17 Hornet would be pretty darn coool!

It is sound thinking....and i've done it before. I have also sold blood to finance my obsession with nice guns.
