Broward County judge on Friday issued what is thought to be the state’s first order temporarily removing guns from a person under Florida’s new gun-control laws.

Four firearms and 267 rounds of ammunition were ordered removed from a 56-year-old Lighthouse Point man who experts determined was a potential risk to himself or others.

The guns and ammunition have been temporarily removed from the man under the state’s new “risk protection” law, which is also sometimes called “red flag” legislation, Lighthouse Point City Attorney Michael Cirullo confirmed.

“We know it’s the first case of its kind in Broward County and we think it’s the first one in Florida, under the new law,” Cirullo said. “Up until the introduction of this law last week, there was no process for us to protect the public in this kind of situation.”

They would save more lives if they would "seize" that Broward Coward, and the sheriff that covered for him and the other gutless wonders.

Okay now wait a minute:

So if he was a committed nutjob, they don't need to use this law correct?

In other words, did they just use this law, even though they didn't need to, just to show they could (ie precedence)?

It's kind of ironic. Florida is the state that started the ball rolling for CCW, now look... they're stealing your guns.

I wonder if every 'person' that is on the ptsd payroll should start considering the future. Like as if....there is a "LIST" with those persons name on it. Adjudicated psyche cases.

I can't say for sure whether they needed the new law to seize the guns first, but doesn't it say a lot that they were able to get the guy committed without the law (which only deals with seizing the guns)? That effectively ended any threat the guy posed, and it would give them enough time to get the appropriate order before he was released if there was a true threat.

Now, of course, there will be a hearing to determine if the gun seizure should extend for a year. Take a guess at how many judges are going to deny that kind of extension at the risk of being blamed for the one in a million cases where the guy goes on to kill someone?

Eliminate qualified immunity and you'll eliminate cops who act like they are above the law.

Northeasterners don’t need to “escape” anywhere.

Seems pretty straightforward to co-opt the state prescription monitoring program for this purpose.

I know that guy - but his name is David!
He was a shytbird truck driver, who received an LTH discharge - but is now being cared for through the VA!
He only lives to do drugs (never met one he didn't like), and copious quantities of alcohol!
