I have a bud that's offering to sell me a LWCR REPR 7.62/308 with a 16" barrel, I have a 20" barreled model, it's set up and ready to go, do you guys that shoot AR style 308's think this can be a usable barrel length for banging around on steel to 500 yards or so?
I have a new box of Lapua brass and a spare NF 2.5-10x24 30mm with lit NP-1 reticle, can the 155 Scenar L's be driven to a usable velocity in 16"s? or what other bullet 'and powder' do you recommend for steel and maybe a deer or hog, rifle may also do SD duty around the farm and home.
Thanks in advance,
Gunner

I'm going to follow this thread, as I'm also wondering about the AR10 platform...

10-4 BSA, I may buy it anyway, 25 bills cash will get it in my hands, it comes with a nice set of LWRC flip up sights, Geissle? trigger and a nice bi-pod.
He also offered a Noreen 308 rifle for 18 bills cash too, I have no knowledge of those, it wears a 22" barrel and weighs 8 lbs, I know I can get the velocity with that one.

I'm going to follow this thread, as I'm also wondering about the AR10 platform... Looks like no one has a short barreled AR-10 BSA, we may be going this project alone, I did do some research, it appears I'll loose at least 200 fps velocity with 16"s of barrel. I did however read most of the 'death by scenar' thread, it looks like the 155 gr Scenar may be my only hope, I could always call Pat and get his thoughts on the 155 scenar leaving at 2700 and see what he thought of the matter, "IF" I can reach 2700 fps and "IF" the rifle doesn't beat/bend the hell out of the 'no lead present' hollow point, it may work. Or, I could just buy the 22" barreled Noreen rifle, I'll have to do some research on that rifle, nice part about the Noreen is it's built my a well respected Belgrade Mt. custom rifle gunsmith by the name of Pete Noreen, if I buy either, I'll post my findings.

Never shot a REPR, but a 16" 308 will reach 500 just fine.

Id like to hear the outcome buddy. That Noreen rifle sounds interesting. I ran across a faux GAP 308 with DPMS lower. Im stuck at this point, not knowing what to build or buy. Maybe i need to start a new thread, asking some of these guys to make a list of parts they would use for an ar 10 build. Of course, im thinking precision quality build on a budget. Something a guy wouldnt be bashful about using in the black rifle challenge here...

It's been several years since I had my 16" Armalite, I used 150 grain NBT's and Varget powder. I did see a little over 2900 fps but it was pulling rims at that pressure. I had to back it off to 2750 for a sane load that wouldn't tear up the gun. I shot it awhile but never stretched it out, though I have no doubt 500 yard steel would be doable even at 2700 fps.
The one thing I do remember of it is it was loud, very loud. Almost as loud as my 15" Encore pistol in 308, it didn't stick around very long at all...

I agree. I hate the muzzle blast of 16" 308s. I shot about 100 rounds out of one before I pulled the barrel & stuck a 20" on it.

Too much muzzle blast, recoil and distraction. I like my 20" barreled AR15's and would probably go that route with a 308. Really thinking hard about buying a GAP 10 with 22" tube right now... ... Gunner, let us kow what you think of that Noreen rifle...

10-4 Barry, Thanks.
TWR and Tyrone, I can only imagine the blast, but with good ears and eyes on it wont bother me much, I now have a new problem.

I'll let you know on the Noreen if I pick it up BSA, I now have a new problem, same Bud has now offered a 22" barreled LWRC REPR for the same money. with it I now have a host of different bullet options because the velocities will be so much higher, pigs, deer, steel and SD? maybe a mid weight Barnes TTSX long range? hells bells I'm confused. That GAP-10 sounds like a fine rifle BSA, high dollar rig, I've thought about it some more, it really doesn't make much sense to me to buy a cheap AR-10 style rifle, a lot going on inside/outside them.

Well BSA ole Buddy, I have decided to go with a 22" barreled rifle, don't know yet if it's going to be the REPR or Noreen, both having 22"s, I've decided the 168 gr Nosler E-Tip at 2700 fps with Varget is a good place to start, it'll hold 1800 fps to 550 yards here at 555 ASL Oklahoma for hunting and remain sonic to 1000 yards.
Also, for deer, pigs, ringing steel, if accurate, and SD use around the house, I can't imagine a better bullet.

Sounds like blasphemy to me. If not a relationship with the black uglies, I would have never got to meet you, would have been worm food decades ago. BTW, what's a Master long range Sharps Rifle shooting purist doing slumming the AR forum anyway?.................treason, hypocrisy, nonconformity?

My 16" bolt gun is at 2600 fps with 46.5 gr of Varget and 155 scenars. Muzzle blast is a non issue since its a suppressor host only so far. Picking up a PTR91 tomorrow but unless I'm surprised with accuracy, I'm not wasting my scenars through it.

10-4 jackmountain, both REPR rifles my friend has offered has a gas tube setting for suppressors, one rifle has two settings, the other has four, they could indeed come in handy.

I'm going to follow this thread, as I'm also wondering about the AR10 platform... Hope you're getting your AR-10 program laid out BSA, I went ahead and bought the 16" REPR today, old Bud's going to bring it to me next week, it's a stock gun with LWRC flip up sights and a couple pmags, bud said it has a Geissle trigger too, now back to trying to get an accurate 2700 fps with the 155 Scenars. I gotta see what all the 'Scenar' fuss is all about.

FWIW to everyone, just got off the request line and placed an order to Talley last week, they're going to make steel Picatinny rail mount QD rings with levers available in less then 30 days, a good clean sturdy less weight/bulk mounting system that absolutely returns to zero has definite interest to me.
I have them on medium to big bore bolt guns, they hold true, the 308 on a heavy AR will be a cake walk for them.

It has the 20" target barrel with target crown, and national match trigger. I shot it yesterday and I love it. Great shooter, no recoil. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm going to be working up a load with some Lapua brass I got a steal on ($30.00/56 pcs). Preliminary groups look promising with some thrown together crap loads. No failures out of about 60 rounds fired yesterday. Let us know how you like that 16" barreled AR10 buddy..
