My wife and I are planning a trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and are looking for information about Cabins or motels in the Paradise to Saulte Saint Marie area. The plan is to leave North Carolina right after Christmas this year. We will be driving. I lived in McMillan many years ago, so I am a bit familiar with things to see ect. but I'm sure lots have changed since that time.
Our preference would be a cabin over a motel room unless the expense is to much. We'll be staying about a week.

Thanks

There are some at Trout Lake, which about in the middle of the area you are talking about. I don't know much about them, because I only drove past on my way to other places.

Do not stay at the Best Western at Trout lake, a rag head owns it and its a stinky piece of chitt, the small hotel right on the corner is clean and nice and the restaurant right beside it serves a great breakfast, as a maker of fact Trout lake has a nice bar too, its a great little town.

If you're looking for some great windshield time, take a trip along Route 2 which runs up the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Breathtaking scenery, neat little towns along the way. You gotta eat some pasties while you're up there. No trip to the U.P. would be complete without some pasties.

When we go up there (We live in the Lower Pennisula) we stay at the casino at the Soo... nice rooms, great restuarant and friendly blackjack dealers.

If you lived in McMillan you know the north shore on Lake Superior can be a bit dicey that time of year. Many cabins are winterized for the season. The area around Taquamenon is still all State land. Not a lot going on there. Injun casinos have brought in $$ and many hotels. Got stuck in one for 4 days a few years ago when the Soo got 60" of snow in 3 days and that was BEFORE Christmas!

Anyway, you can check this one out or use the website to look for others: https://www.vrbo.com/46500 The week aftwer Christmas week is usually waaay cheaper.

I wonder if that restaurant in McMillan still has those homemade cinnamon rolls as big as Frisbees? I would often drive 40 miles out of my way for one.

I think it is or was called the Poor Boy. North side of M-28. Triangle has some dang good breakfasts for a reasonable price though.

K22-
If you lived in McMillan through wintertime, I suspect you may remember the weather and road conditions you might encounter in a UP visit just after Xmas. Many of the trolls and others who come north at that time of year are planning to do some snowmobiling.

I suspect he's taling about the Poorboy Restaurant, at the corner of Main St. (M-28) and McMillan Ave. If you remember M-28 from your time there, when traveling east from Shingleton that intersection is the start of a curve that is the first time in about 40 miles that your steering wheel has to be turned more than about 5° from top dead center. I think the restaurant may be shuttered.

In fact, if you want the most famous sweet roll in the whole state of Michigan, you have to travel from McMillan about 160 miles west to L'Anse to the Hilltop Restaurant https://www.sweetroll.com:

O man, that does bring back memories. I forgot about PoorBoy restaurant. I do remember the Winters. More snow than most people see in a lifetime...........well kind of. The Triangle had some great breakfasts. My son worked there for awhile. I lived across from a Bar and Grill on 135, Manistique Lakes Road. Can't remember the name of the place.
I remember that Timber Charlie's in Newberry was a great place to eat also.

It's also a Finnish dish that's popular up there. The miners used to pack them for lunch down in the iron ore mines-they're kind of a potpie with no gravy.

If you end up in Saulte Saint Marie make sure you get a stop at The Antler! Taquamenon Falls are gorgeous that time of year.

If you end up going up the west side of the state give me a shout, I'll buy you and your wife dinner.

We were through McMillan last year and Poor Boys was closed.

This is the BEST cinnamon roll I have ever had!!!! We just recently had some shipped to friends for gifts. Also, the state record lake trout is on the wall.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Best Western in Trout Lake (if that is what it was), has been closed and rotting for a number of years

If your staying in Trout Lake you cant be the Buckhorn for burgers and McGowan's for Friday Whitefish. If you make the trip to the Soo Antlers is an experience all in itself and great steaks to boot, check ahead of time. We were there around the holidays a few years back and they were closed for the company Christmas party. Another good place in the Soo is Freighters restaurant right by the Soo Locks, excellent prime rib. The locks should still be open until mid January depending on ice conditions. Pretty cool to watch a 1000 foot ship pass by just 50 yards away.

Don't pass up an opportunity to try a pasty, they originated in Cornwall England but us Yoopers taken them as our own. Also, any one of a dozen country stores smoke their own fresh Whitefish and Trout. Enjoy your trip.

The Falls are must. When I was in Boy Scouts we canoed from the lower Falls on down. I love that area.

I don't think we'll make to the West side, but if we do I would be happy to meet up with you Paul. What you did for Gabriel was awesome and I can't thank you enough.

Pasties are a must.

Is the Penguin restaurant still open in Paradise?

We spend our time on the west side now and it has been a while, IIRC, I was taking my son over to the shipwreck museum.
