I am thinking of purchasing (another..) 99 that I found. I don't have any 1899's (just 99's) so I am looking for info. This isn't a serious collector rifle, it's been well used; but would be a nice addition and hopefully a shooter as well. I have reviewed the rifle vs. Murray's book and it fits the description of this model very well. No pictures at the moment.
Rifle details: - Best I can tell it is an 1899 model. - 250-3000 caliber - takedown - SN 201,xxx (pre 1919?) - Thin schnabel forend checkered; pistol grip stock, capped, checkered - 22" light barrel - sights are present and appear correct - trigger is not cross-hatch checkered just grooved
Condition details: - no extra holes in rifle or stock - tang is cracked, possibly repaired; cannot tell from the surface. - bluing worn off most of receiver and some of the barrel - color case still visible on lever strap - other than tang crack, stock is well used but not damaged.
It is my intention to see if the owner will allow removal of the butt-plate and forend to see if serial numbers match. I presume the 1899's had matching numbers as the early 99's do? Other areas of inspection and markings to look for?
I welcome thoughts on the rifle as well as value.
Thanks,
Eric

Check the bore. Otherwise sounds like you have it covered. What is the asking prices?

Thanks for the info. Asking $540, I’m thinking $500 or so.

It is a 1899 250-3000 type II. Described features confirm. Sounds like a desirable rifle at a good price. Grab it. Tip - 87 grain ammo.

Thanks, nice to have confirmation.
No doubt on the ammo. I have a 250 EG, the group size gets much smaller with the 87 grain speers.
