Anyone have a rifle in the chambering or familiar with it? Case capacity, accuracy potential?

Thanks

6.5x284, think 6.5/06 in a shorter case.

Long range craze....

Just a promising new paper puncher. Lapua is looking for it to make a name for itself in the 600 yard benchrest scene. Fellas tryin' to get that 6.5mm 140gr boolit seated out of the powder column and still be able to launch from the short action platform. Good benchrest concept that doesn't seem to bring anything of much interest to the hunting table like the 6.5-284 did.

Anyone know what case the 6.5x47 is based on? Originally I thought it was nothing but the 6x47 (ala .222 Mag) case necked up, but I have a feeling I was wrong. blush

I guess it's reasonable to assume that Lapua was trying to improve on the 6x47 Swiss Match round while appeasing the benchrest guys with smaller primer pockets and smaller flash-holes. I read where this round is operating at some pretty high pressures too. Mid 60s I think. Not crazy high, but interesting.

Check out http://www.6mmbr.citymaker.com/index.html

Great site. I plagiarize all my benchrest info from there.

OCC, why do you say it's not interesting for hunting? Too similar to the .260 Remington?

Well, it is very similar to the 260, but I guess I meant that it doesn't really bring any significant performance enhancements, just a new headstamp. BUT, what's interesting to me, might not be interesting to someone else.

Dennis,

Hopefully Woofer will post up here on this as he seems pretty excited about this cartridge.

He seems to think you could get better ballistics than the light 25 calibers using the same weight bullets and do it with less recoil. I would have to agree with him.

I disagree, It will do what the .260 AI will with less powder and and still feed through the magazine, but I may be biased due to the fact I'm building one on a Borden Alpine action.

Not sure with what you disgree with?

Better ballistics than 25 calibers with less recoil which means you are using less powder. Seems that is what I was trying to say.

How will it do what the 260AI can do? And still feed through the magazine??? I'm missing something here, enlighten me.

The cartridge has fractionally less body length and more case taper than a 250 Savage AI. It comes close to a 260, but can't equal it of course because of lesser case capacity.

I'm scratching my head here too. Is this thing supposed to be as accurate as the 6mm PPC?, and be able to hold its own at some longer ranges? I wonder what the powder capacity is. It looks very interesting to me. I almost built a 6mm BR Norma-this might be a little more versatile. The 6.5x284s that I have worked with would shoot great at longer distances- 3"groups at 400 and 500 yds etc, but they wouldn't shoot BR type groups at 100 yds. A true .5" 5 shot group was about as good as I ever got working up loads, even though the same loads shot 5 under 8"@1000 and 10 under 10". Maybe this one can do a little of both?

Read the article, would like to know how they get the speed they do get. Longer barrel?

There's just so much capacity.

Yep, 28" barrel. Also, they're stepping on the gas pretty hard.
In his "high node" tests, the brass didn't live very long.

Understood. It's weird enough that kind of I want one in a lightweight hunting rifle. It'd be a campfire confounder.

I shoot with Darrel, and have seen the rifle. It is a very accurate round. I went a different route and necked the 6.5 down to 6mm and am using the 115 Sierra. Getting 3010 from a 29 1/2" barrel.

I am currently building a .260 and think that will be better for my usage, but can certainly see where a Super light rifle built around the 6.5x47 could be a lot of fun.

The only way I know to get .260 velocities with less powder is to push pressure. I'm not saying that's bad necessarily, but I'm not exactly sure it's good either.
