What do you all recommend for a 300 win mag?
Know the APA bastards are good, curious if there are better options?
Thanks

The best brake for a 300 WM is by far the 30-06 or 308 Win. π€£
Your hunting buddies and future hearing will thank you!

CarolinaHunter, yours is a good recommendation. I went that way a number of years ago. A .308 will kill deer at over 500 yards. It does take the bullet longer to get there, leaving more time for the deer to take a step and screw things up. There is always a trade off.....

Scott Weichel of live oak Percision is making a new break that eats a ton of recoil.

^^^ What redneck recommended. I had a local smith install a KDF on my 300WM and it really settled the muzzle jump down and tamed the recoil. It is a pleasure to shoot, but it is loud. My ears rang for a good day after I shot my first cow elk with it in the trees with no ear-pro. Won't do that again! Wish I got a thread protector for it so I could take the brake off whilst hunting.

Thanks guys, this is helpful. I've got an 06 but wanted to play around with the 300 and 150/168 Barnes for longer range.

Indian Creek Designes makes a universal shroud that fits over the brake of your choice. It allows you to tame recoil, but still direct the sound away from the shooter.

I'm not one of Redneck's customers, but I have KDF brakes on my .375 RUM and on my .300 Weatherby, and I would never even consider removing them. Before I had the KDF brake installed on my .375 RUM, I couldn't even shoot it enough to work up a load for it. With the brake I have easily worked up sub MOA loads for it with 300 and 270 grain TSX bullets and with 300 grain Partitions. I've taken this rifle on two African hunts and have killed animals from Steenboks to Buffalo and Eland with it, several from prone positions, and at ranges from 30 to 350 yards. I had the KDF brake installed on my 300 Weatherby before I fired my first shot with it, and it quickly became my favorite rifle. With the KDF brake it kicks less than my 308 Win in a similar rifle. I have developed sub MOA loads for it with a variety of 168 and 180 grain bullets from Barnes and Hornady. Since I built this rifle in 2009, it has been my 1st choice rifle for almost all of my hunts and it is my favorite rifle to ring the gongs at our local range.

What about an easily removable brake - do any of the ones above fit that criteria? Different situations and different use cases - eg not hurting a guides ears.

I am not a radial brake fan as I shoot a lot prone so I prefer a good side discharge. I have them from Benchmark as well as APA and prefer them to m old Vias and KDFβs radials for my uses.
I have also played with the Live Oak brake that frediii references above and really like it as well.
Pretty much any user timetable side discharge brake will serve a Guy well.

Kinda thinking the new obermeyer on the 300 will kick like a heavy 300 with a great side ventπ really soon.
This week turn time is killing me. π
