Glock, M&P, Sig, Ruger, go somewhere that carries them, and figure out what YOU like.

Just depends on how big or small you want.

G-19 is always a good choice & very shootable; G-26 is fine too if you like smaller & at least for me, it carries somewhat easier with a variety of (lighter) clothing.

The older version M&P 9c Compact is a really nice carrying & shooting gun too........my wife has one. And the new Compact 2.0 is a really nice feeling & balanced gun.

For a little more money, I'm really liking the H-K VP9 SK & it will likely be my next pistol; it's about the size of the G-26 but with a slightly longer & much more ergonomic grip.

I carry a Walther CCP. It isn’t hi capacity, but very concealable. I have a Glock 43 also, but shoot the CCP better. I prefer a hi cap model for my night stand.

Nothing that is said here should be what sways you. There are a ton of great choices out there. Get to a gun store and start fondling them! Glock 19's are great all-around guns, as are the Smith M&P's. Ruger even makes the LCR in 9mm. While I don't carry it, my favorite 9mm is my Kimber 1911. It makes trips to the range a lot of fun.

Good luck in your decision--few "wrong" answers out there!

First gun? = something with manual safety. IMHO. If not then get 19 and it’ll last you forever.

Buy a G19,replace the stock sights with something useful, and get to shooting. I'm not sure why you're even considering small single stacks if it is meant to be for range/fun use first.

I'm really enjoying my M&P shield 9mm. You don't have to change the sights, and it's hard to beat for the money - you can usually find them for under $300.

I've put close to 30k rounds downrange in Gen1, 3, and 4 Glock 9mm pistols, and here's what I've learned.
1. The G17, G19, and G26 are excellent choices.
2. Pistols of the same generation tend to be equally accurate regardless of the model. Later generations tend to be more accurate than early generations, but they're all acceptable. Finding the right load is the first and most important step in making any Glock more accurate.
3. Aftermarket support for any Glock is superb.
4. Replace the plastic factory sights with something made of steel before you take any Glock into harm's way. Before you do this, shoot it with the factory sights to double-check POI for elevation, which can be badly off. Most sights sold as replacements are the same height as the factory sights and you may need a taller or shorter front sight to get POI where it should be. Ameriglo makes excellent sights and offers the broadest range of choices.
5. In a good IWB holster, I can get about the same draw times with the G17, G19, and G26.
The G19 and G17 are easier to reload at speed than the G26.
6. A G19 weighs about four ounces more than a G26. Both are heavy enough to require a first-rate belt/holster combo.
7. The G17 is nice, but I see no reason to choose it over the G19.
8. You can use G17 mags in all three pistols. Most people I know carry a G17 spare mag no matter which of the three they carry.

For what it's worth, SOCOM and a lot of secret-squirrel military units issue the G19 with factory night sights.

It’s better than the G19 - even hickock45 agrees

Solid advice... I've switched from Glock to the M&P line up, but there are plenty of really good choices. Find one that suits you and shoot the snot out of it.

I didn't have to change the factory sights on my G19 they were right on.
It carries well in a good IWB holster
