Went to the in-laws today to pick up my 4 yo son. His grandfather has decided to give him his Savage 99 in 250-3000.
I would like the experts to help me identify the rifle. I left the gun in his safe since the truck had as many as I could fit in it already.(With the 4yo)Here is what I know at this time: 1. Serial # 712*** 2. 250-300 3. Looks excellent. Blueing near perfect. Case color perfect. 4. He bought it NIB from a neighbor who had been in the Navy. The neighbor purchased the rifle in Cuba. Father-in-law said it was still in oil when he opened the box. This was in 1958. He paid $65. 5. It has a brass round counter in the side of the reciever. 6. The bolt is jeweled. 7. The barrel it pretty long. 8. It has iron sights but he had it tapped for mounts at some piont. It currently has a weaver 4.5 ? on top.
In general it seems to be in very good condition and has not been used very much.
Sorry I do not have the rifle in front of me at this time but I am very curious about the rifle. Any idea of the value for insurance?
Help from the experts is appreciated. Please forgive my ignorance of these beautiful rifles.

If it has a schnabel forend it should be an EG, if the forend is rounded it should be an R. If the "Savage Model 99" on the front receiver ring is visible on the left side (not hidden by the mount) it is a factory drill and tap.

It does have the schnable forend so it is an EG. Did not notice the "Savage Model 99" location.
Thanks for the help.

Purchased at the PX in Guantanamo? Or in Havana, pre-Castro?

It will really be neat in a few years when he shoots his first deer with the rifle.

Someone really needs to research the export practices of the Savage Arms Corp. I smell a story there. Maybe one for the "book."

I'll see if I can get more details from paw-in-law. For all I know the neighbor had the gun for a period of time before selling it to my father-in-law. He told me the box was still in some sort of wraping paper when he opened it.
