Wooters was one of my favorites and a main reason why I subscribed to Petersen's Hunting for decades. His Buck Sense column was can't miss.
The only complaint I ever had with Wooters was his criteria for general purpose deer cartridges. He tended to steer his readers away from the lower end of the power scale. He often stated that the 243, 250 Savage and 257 Roberts were marginal cartridges and he described them as "experts cartridges". I never agreed with this assessment.
He was a truly great gun writer and I loved his stories on the deer camps he frequented growing up.
As I recall, in his book on hunting trophy deer, he recommended calibers larger than .25 for that pursuit, which makes sense when you consider how difficult it is to even see, let alone shoot big, wise, old bucks under fair-chase conditions. He might lower the bar now with so many premium bullets available, maybe not. In any event, it's hard to fault the logic of one with so much actual experience.
"Fortunately", I don't have to worry about such monsters on the public patches I hunt. At the first flash of orange, the big boys, if any, either walk across the river to private land, or across the road to the wooded community there.
