Juneteenth was burned into my brain at an early age: my grandfather (an old-time Texan) always told me, "Remember, you can't get a decent watermelon before Juneteenth." (This was before they started shipping them up from Mexico.) Watermelon was a summer staple back then...

Slow thread....This must yet again be evidence of the sheltered effect of living in a 97% white utopian community. Blissfully ignorant.

I had to look it up to know what the hell you guys were talking about. With as many blacks that I grew up around and I've never heard of it. Go figure, you learn something new every day. I know what Emancipation Day is, but If someone came and asked me when it was, I wouldn't be able to tell ya.

Had to goolgle "big red" never heard of it. It's a huge seller down in Texas, and across ethnic lines despite what some on here seem to think. There are about a dozen different flavors of the stuff. This side of the Red River it doesn't sell nearly as well, just too sweet.

One of my best friends was born on Juneteenth. We used to get fried chicken and watermelons to help him “celebrate” his birthday when we were in high school and college. He continues to get congratulatory calls and we are in our 50s. He is a great guy! The “holiday”, not so much....
