Since I'm sitting here waiting for the storm to pass,...might as well ask for suggestions on how to save this tree.

A big limb about 14" in diameter just came off of it and stripped the bark off the tree about a foot wide and 5' up the side of the tree. I'd hate to lose the tree. But with a wound that size, I know that it won't make it without some work.

What would serve to cover up a wound on a tree that big?,...or is it a lost cause?

Cut off clean up any jagged wood left from break.

It will either make it or it won’t. If it’s a large enough tree it should be fine.

I would check with an arborist as there is something that you can put on the open area to protect it from insect, weather etc. Dave

Wrap it with burlap and keep the burlap or canvas damp. Change it weekly to keep the cloth from getting rotten or a fungus.

some species heal readily... some just die. The species is important. If it is something like birch, just cut it now.

Well,...I'll tell ya the truth. I'm neither here nor there on the tree,...but I'd rather save it that have to take it down.

The limb that came off is about a third of the tree. I've been out there with a chainsaw,..and cleaning up the mess is as much tree cutting activity as I want to deal with for a while.

It's not the cutting, actually. It's the clean up.

It's a fair sized tree.

At lease it didn't land on a car. I cut and loaded up enough to clear out the driveway. If the weather leaves me alone I'll get the rest of it out of the way today.

It's a damned old Bradford Pear,..a big one as Bradford pears go.

My son was over a couple of days ago,..we were out by the tree, and I told him the next good wind would take that big branch off.

,..and there it is!

Cut off as even with trunk as you can. Apply tree wound coumpound, that will keep insects out until bark covers it.

It split off and took one side of the tree with it from about 5' up all the way to the ground. I had a good look at it since I first posted and I think it's probably gone.

Pretty much agree with ^^^ This ^^^

God only knows how many trees had every bit as bad and worse damage from the big ice storm of several years back and the vast majority survived, recovered and are still growing just fine. May take a while but odds are it will do likewise.

Bradford pears are a relatively short lived tree 20 to 30 years.

probaly is all you can do is to trim the area clean and paint the trunk to keep bugs and insects out.

All sorts of speculation that could be cleared up with one picture. But then again where is the fun in that. whistle

Pears are very prone to splitting due to their multi lead form... there are wound dressings as mentioned above that can’t hurt if applied. I’ve seen pears last long after an injury like that but you still always only have 2/3 of the tree left.
