I resurrected an "old thread" asking about powder for the 270 WSM. Seems that there are MANY that work, as in a LOT of them.

By capacity alone, the velocity factor is well met with most powders the guys have listed, and even if not listed, capacity again lends velocity. For my use with the 270 WSM, anything that gives 270 Winchester +P velocity is plenty.

Clean and consistent would be some worthy criteria, as well, and above all, so would be Accuracy.

I am interested in the Enduron offerings.
And I am interested in powders that are temp stable as well.
I'll most likely run somewhat heavy bullets most of the time (150/160gr) but on occasion might dip as light at 130 grain.

With one pick of an Enduron, and two or three other offerings, what would you suggest.?

Thank You.

Best accuracy I've gotten from a .270 WSM was with MagPro and 160 grain partitions.

G'luck.

Thank you TOM, I've seen Lot's of suggestion for Mag Pro that share your experience also.

Another for MagPro. Tried R-22 in my A7 Tecomate and couldn't get good groups. Tried MP and got good groups right form the start.

There is often heard a statement that goes like this, " If you can't get performance from 'X-XXXX' powder, then there's either something wrong with your gun, or there's something wrong with you.."

We've got 4 responses, and 3 powders listed already.
I tend to believe that any one of the three (plus some unmentioned as of yet) would work, and work well.

Guess I'd like to know if there is 1 powder that has been proven well enough to apply the quote above "If you can't get performance with 'x-xxxx" then...."

I use Ramshot Magnum.I shoot 140 grain Bergers at just under 3,200 FPS with a book load into .5" groups at 100 yards and .9" groups at 200 yards. That is the only powder I tried that got that velocity combined with that accuracy.Huntz

We're up to 5 powders now.

Not exactly narrowing down a "single" powder, are we. LOL.!

The 270 WSM is the only caliber that might make me give up on 7 mags. I really like it.

The two guns I owned shot the load above with 160 grain partitions and MagPro well.

One of them wouldn't shoot anything else very well.

The other did nicely with 130 grain ballistic tips and H4831. It did pretty will with most powders I tried. I sold it because it fed really rough, lot of drag feeding cartridges from the magazine compared to the '06 family, 7mm - 300 - 338 mags, etc. It was not a rifle you could chamber a shell in without dropping the buttstock off your shoulder to find a position giving more leverage.

Well I scored a Lb of Mag Pro, and I'm going to burn some and see how it goes.

That's saying a lot, Rory.

I was actually looking for a 7 of some kind when this 270 WSM popped up for a price I couldn't say "NO" to. Figured it would be close enough for my needs.

I think it is a good indication of a so called balanced case/capacity that the 270 WSM works with a wide range of powders. I got stuck on the R's somehow and all of them from 17-26 work well. My main loads feature R22, R25, & R26 with 140s or 150s. I am getting 3200 with 140s and 3150 with 150s and see no reason to try to get more velocity.

I see the WSM as a short fat way to get the maximum 270 Win. performance without stomping on it too hard. I think even some of the factory loads are too hot. Some of the brass I have encountered is so thick that that may be the problem. If you start out at 65,000 psi there is not much wiggle room and a short throat or a thick neck can get you above red line easily. The 270 Win. has been getting er done since 1925 (35?) and the WSM just gets it a little more donner.

R26, Mag Pro and Retumbo ( Haven't tried Magnum) are stand outs but anything between 4350 and R33 works. I think I will burn up some AA8700 with 160s just because I can.

MagPro gave the highest velocities in mine but I only got good accuracy with 140 gr bullets (and heavier). I got really good results with H4831 and 130 gr bullets until the barrel became toast. I'm headed to the gunsmith in the morning with a new 9 twist Benchmark barrel. Given how Reloder 26 has performed in my 264 I'll be trying that and H4831.

Forgot to mention R23 looks really good for the lighter bullets and it is as close to a flat liner for temperature stability as it gets, but I haven't tried it yet. R26 is very good until you hit 90 degrees and above where some have reported temp./pressure spikes.

Sounds like good conformation for me choosing the Mag Pro for my rig. If it worked well for 140gr bullets and heavier, that is exactly where I'll be in load development. I'll be starting with the 160 NPT's. cool
