I used to sit here by an open window in the morning listening to the mourning doves. They're all gone now. I haven't seen or heard one here in several years. They've been totally replaced by the collared doves. They carry on all day. I've got so that I can identify several of them by their voices. I don't mind the collareds but I sure miss the mournings.

SUPPOSEDLY (?) they don’t compete with mourning doves but I’m not so sure. They’re slower and easier to hit during dove season and here they don’t count against your limit.😊

We can shoot them year round with no limit. When they first started showing up here they said that they didn't compete with mournings but those are long gone. The mournings are migratory and they'll move out in early Sept. The collared stay year round. We have them at the bird feeder all winter.

Dang few doves of any kind around my patch of NW Louisiana. LFW says collard doves count in your bag limit.

The collared doves ran all of the mourning doves out of our neighborhood 5 or 6 years ago. It's now rare to see a MD around. I hate the collared ones- that noisy, raspy call is irritating, and they sit on my deck railings and make a big mess. Good target practice with the pellet rifle, tho.

But they arent normally found in huntable numbers in the open country, preferring ranch buildings, corrals, stockyards and town.

Oh, and cormorants and gator gar dont affect game fish populations either.

That's the problem here, too. I could shoot collareds all day long but they're never out where it's safe to shoot. They're all clustered near buildings.

Here is what Nebraska game and parks thinks about collared doves. And yes they do push out the Mourning and white wings.

Hunters in Nebraska may encounter three species of doves while afield. The most commonly harvested species is the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), which is a migratory species and one of the most popular game birds in the United States in terms of harvest. The white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica) is an occasional visitor to Nebraska, but can be legally harvested during the regular dove season. The white-winged dove is also a migratory bird. Unlike mourning and white-winged doves, the Eurasian collared-dove (Streptopelia decaocto) is a non-native, non-migratory species. The collared-dove was first introduced into the Bahamas in the 1970s, and made landfall in Florida in the early 1980s. It has since spread across the country in a northwesterly direction. The collared-dove can be harvested year round, but during the regular dove season, harvested individuals count towards the aggregate dove bag limit. For more information visit The Central Flyway.

Check with your F&G. In AZ, they can be shot over bait, with pellet guns, year round. They dont count in a bag, there is no limit, no migratory stamp required and they want them killed.

Yep, Idaho Fish and Game want them dead.
BB gun, pellet guns, whatever.
Great opportunity for kids, grandkids, hobos and homeless.

Here in Cali the Eurasian Collared doves are classified as "resident small game" but there's no limit and they're open all year. Pellet guns are legal for take.

I've got a pretty good crop going around here and a few may have to die this year.

Gotta taste as good as "park pheasant" (pigeons) a la Sterno stove, eh?

Geno

PS, the leftover sterno makes a good after dinner aperitif when sweetened with some stolen sugar packets from the shelter.

Never have seen many of em around upper middle tn
Few and far in between
Slumlord blew one away couple years ago
Was kinda surprised It Was a collared

They don't count against limit in th.
At least per last yrs regs.

Seem tons of em in Iraq in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers areas.
Fugg it seemed almost like some of those Argentina videos at times
Flocks of hundreds of em

No onehunts em their.
They would rather eat a nasty toxic waste stream drinking goat anyways.

Alot of the post you guys report about em seem to be from drier more arid parts of the country.

Seems they don't mind dry.

The Las Vegas NV area and places across the river in AZ (Dolan Springs, Kingman, Bullhead City) were filling up fast with them when I last lived around there in 2007.

I guess if there's a water source they'll be there. Like a cattle tank, or a house with a fountain, watered lawns, etc.

Same thing happened where I live around 10 years ago. In the last couple years the collared doves are on the decline and the mourning doves are making a comeback.

It's about all I see anymore around my house. Used to have a pair of MD that nested on our eaves. She would hatch 2-3 clutches each summer. Last two years she has been gone and all I see are ECD. Can't stand that noise they make as they alight on a branch. Sort of a screech.
