On my brake pads for my 2008 Tacoma 4x4 the inner and outer pads are the same, I can't tell any difference. Yet one has a sheet metal finger on it and the directions say It must be put on the inside. When I took the old pads off that I had done some years ago the tab was on the outside on both sides. The left inner pad was down to metal on the top half, worn on an angle. Compressing those pistons was a bitch. The only thing I can figure is that if that tab would have been on the inside it would have squealed. It seems strange that even though the calipers have 4 equal pistons the inner pads wore faster. These are the rotors I took off: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?....1910682735652357&type=3&theaterhttps://www.facebook.com/photo.php?....1910682735652357&type=3&theater

Ever flushed the brake hydraulic system? Brake fluid is hygroscopic, absorbs moisture from atmosphere. Since water is heavier than brake fluid it ends up in calipers which is lowest point in system. Causes caliper pistons to corrode.
Anytime you compress pistons you should open bleeder valve slightly to allow any moisture contamination to escape.
Your mind is your primary weapon. Never let it get rusty.

It sounds like your caliper is not sliding on the pins or raceways. The piston pushes the inner pad and drags the caliper back against the outer pads. If it the pins or raceway is sticking the inners will wear out faster that the outers.

Actually the caliper doesn't slide. It has 4 pistons, two on each side. The pas slide on two pins, looked like it got stuck on one. I was looking to see if anyone made them in stainless steel, salt on our roads probably is what made them corrode. I had to drive them out with a pin punch.

Don't lose any sleep over it. These "squeal tabs" are for people that don't take care of their trucks and barely know where the gas goes. There's no substitute for inspecting them in person when you rotate your tires. By the time they squeal, it's too late in my book, and sometimes they don't work like they should.. Yes, I'm guilty and had to learn the hard way.
