I’m looking to get a more practical and lighter stock for my Savage Axis 6.5 Creed. Perhaps even a chassis. With that I see a lot of stocks listed for just “savage short action “ and some specific for an Axis. Is there any difference?

Probably get more answers in the Hunting Rifles forum. Most of the stuff talked about here is much, much older..

Figured that might be the case. But thought that it might be worth a shot in the Savage specific forum. Just a little confused because I’m seeing some stocks listed for the Axis and some listed for Savage short action. Not sure and don’t want to drop $500 have it not fit and feel like an idiot.

There's some very knowledgeable folks about current Savage rifles over there. Couple pop in here as well, but not as many or as often.

Savage Axis action screw spacing and magazine mounting is specific to the Axis (they have 4.8" screw spacing), and are the same for axis long or short action. Their magazines determine the action length. They're not interchangeable with their other short actions (S/A screw spacing + 4.5"- early, 4.25"- common stagger feed, 4.4" column feed), or long actions (5.0")

Thanks. I appreciate the quick response. It’s a good shooting rifle but I would like to lighten it up with a stock or chassis system. The thumb hole stock also makes a quick and easy reach to the tang safety a little cumbersome for a stalking/still hunting rifle.

But as long as you are here perhaps we can talk you into "test driving" a classic 99!

A Boyd stock might be more practical, better ergs, but a Boyds stock would almost certainly be heavier than the factory synthetic stock.

The Axis has a synthetic trigger guard that is part of the stock.

++1 on test driving a classic 99 while you're here. We take trade-ins all the time!

In my experience you can chase the Savage 110 custom component shiny bauble thing until your wallet runs dry..., it's fun, but in the end you haven't really drastically advanced the weapon.

If you are chasing ultimate accuracy, or lightest weight.., keep us posted on your successes.

For my money, I would just modify the factory tupperware, it works, it's cheap, and in the end you'll have 95% of weight reduction you hoped for, plus saving time and money for the next greatest project!

Stevens 200 S/A in 204 Ruger, you can put the extra weight in a more accurate barrel, cut away the rest, go hunt!

I posted here before referencing grand dads old 250. I passed it on to my cousins son. It was a 1924 vintage, 250-3000 take down with a 1/4 turn barrel. I had the wood cleaned and the checkering freshened up. The action was cleaned and inspected. It wore a Williams peep specifically made for the 99’s and was very accurate. I also had a canvas gun case that was made for the 99 take down. It had a sleeve to fit it together or pockets that would fit it taken down.
