It's my lucky rifle. It would probably be the last one I'd sell other than my grandpa's guns. I have more accurate rifles, but this one sure seems to get the job done when I need it. I think we all have rifles like that.

I also have one that scares deer away I think. Over the years the .35 Rem seems to be that gun for me. Come to think of it, I've never seen a deer while carrying the .35 Rem. I have a 760 that I'd very much like to shoot a deer with but they don't come out when I carry it.

been gone awhile and there is lots to catch up on...deer, sasquatches, savages, Tom's WT SD license, dark walleyes, etc. So here goes:

Deer: we can shoot 3 deer each in our zone. My kids really want to do that but if I do the math....that is 12 deer for us. Add the potential for 5 pronghorn and an elk and I dont think we can eat 18 critters in my house. We do have too many does and are gonna make war on them this year.

Savages: I have heard those Sconny womenfolk can be mistaken for sasquatches. makes sense I guess.

Tom's WT license: Congrats! A ton of fun is in the planning. Bring us along for the ride!

Dark walleyes: they taste the same as light ones. mmmmm.

Now my updates.

The good: Went up to the Boundary Waters Canoe area with the family. Great time, but that area is not what I would call fertile country. Not a lot of critters, birds, or fish. Peaceful, yes, but I wouldnt go there on a wildlife viewing trip.

Youth Outdoor Activity Day is coming up on Sunday August 26th. All Free. We have 50 activities for kids to do. We will give each kid a tshirt, everyone lunch and ice cream and give away 1,000 duck calls, 1,000 fishing rods/reels, 500 butterfly nets, 100 BB guns, 100 Bows and arrows and tons of other stuff. We are expecting 2,500 kids. If you can get to Alexandria with some kids, I promise you will have a great time. Absolutely no cost (it is a rule, we dont even ask for donations).

The REALLY BAD: On Friday night, our 2.5 year old yellow lab died of heat stroke. It happened fast. It wasnt that hot. She wasnt working that hard or long. It just happened and I have since learned that it can happen when it isnt that hot. Our kids are devastated. telling your kids the family dog died sucks really bad. Hardest thing I have ever had to do as a parent.

How did that happen?

a neighbor kid was throwing the ball for her in the shade for 20-30 minutes about 445 pm. Something that happens multiple times daily for her. It was warm but not overly hot. She is a retrieving fool and does this all of the time. She took her own breaks a few times. I came out about 515 ish and noticed a slight limp. We checked her leg. Nothing. checked the hip. nothing. gave her a treat. She wouldnt eat it. Now we suspected heat stroke so we hosed her down good. a few minutes later we did it again. She vomited and had diarrhea. we hosed her a third time and had her come in and sit over the air conditioning vent. She still appeared to be fairly normal in terms of behavior. She took a nap and basically never recovered. She died at 3 am. We had an emergency vet on the phone who ran us through some things and she passed. The vet thought she was getting better.

My wife and I went over it a thousand times. What we could have done differently and it just didn't make sense. It just wasn't that hot out (i peeled corn in the sun and I wasn't hot at all and I am a baby in the heat...and remember, she was in the shade the whole time).

Man that’s horrible. That happened quickly! Our new pup has been telling me on these hot days when she wants to come in. Usually, she never wants to come in.

Damn I can only image how the kids are feeling.

Life has a way of providing teaching moments even when we don’t want them.

New puppy time.

Bummer about the dog..

This morning I was almost 700 feet below sea level and never left Minnesota. It was 51 degrees down there and felt great.

Ah, Soudan Mine, eh? Pretty amazing those guys had fingers left after how they pounded in the chisels for the dynamite holes.

They closed the research lab several years ago. Grand daughter thought the elevator ride up and down was pretty good. She likes mines and caves such things. This was my second trip down in there and it is always interesting.

Sorry to hear about the dog, that's one of the toughest things to go through.

I was on a work trip last week and found myself by Cohasset MN. visited the Forest history center while I was there. that was one of the funnest field trips I have been on in recent years. they had actors playing people of the years during the big timber boom in the first years of the 1900's. team of horses the whole bit. it was awesome, I hope to take the kids sometime.

My son and I returned from the Savage Fest. We had a great time, met some of our awesome members, learned a lot, and came home with a very nice 99 E in .243 for my grand daughter. She's a year old, so my son and I have some time to break it in. I'll carry it this fall, and hand it off to Eric as soon as I fill a tag with it.
