Just wondering if anyone here has ever tried to mount a Burris Fullfield scope (3-9x40) on a pre-64 M70?
I was contemplating this last night while working on my pre-64 M70 Westerner 264 WM. Not sure I want to take off the original Redfield that is on there to find out that the bolt won't clear. I was thinking of doing this since the old Redfield leaves much to be desired in the optics dept. and because I'm not getting the accuracy that I would expect from this rifle. I'm thinking the scope may be a little wonky. That wouldn't surprise me since my Dad probably put that scope on it around 1970 or so. It just so happens that I have this Fullfield laying around. The Burris wouldn't be my first choice to put on this rifle, but I really don't want to go buy another scope if I don't have to.

Nope, never happened...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Cant vouch for the 3-9 fullfield on a M70, but I do have an old fullfied 4X on a pre-64. It has been a dependable scope since I bought it new in 1985. It is my retro rig, Beuhler mounts and all

Well, I thank irfubar and bsa for their comments and trying to help. The picture that irfubar posted helps a lot since it looks like the scope is mounted a little higher on his rifle than what the current mounts on my rifle would allow. I really don't think the bolt will clear if I put the Burris on it unless I also switch the rings/mount. Guess I'll go a different direction. Thanks for the help!
And by the way, fat girls and volkswagens were never my style, but then again, fat girls try harder!

What's so hard about swapping the scopes to check?

Nothing really hard about it. It's just that I don't want to demount and re-sight the rifle if I don't have to. Laziness on my part, I guess. If someone already had tried it and knew it wouldn't work or had problems, why not listen to them?

Test, I'll show you some pics of my pre 64's with burris 3-9x40 rifle scopes in dual dovetails, when I get home. I was hoping someone else would show some pics, but it looks like only irfubar and myself use them.

I believe the Buehler mounts on my M70 are medium height? The eye piece diameter on my Burris is 1.520" my Leupolds run 1.560" so the Burris is relatively slim and the bolt clears fine.
I have the Leupold dual dovetail lows on another pre-64 but I am running a Leupold compact 6x on it and it clears fine. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
BSA is a great resource as he has had many pre-64's with various scopes mounted.

test1328,
If you are unwilling to change the mounts, the first thing to do is measure the ocular (eyepiece) diameter of the old scope that is on it. The new scope will be closer to the bolt by one half the difference in diameter between the new and old ocular. (one half because it is the radius, not the diameter.) It's not quite that simple, due to the trigonometry of the clearance tween the ocular and the bolt, but it is a reasonable way to start.

Alright, here goes. I like Burris rifle scopes. They have never done me wrong. I have 1 scope in particular that has been on 9 different rifles. It was my go to for years for testing accuracy on different rifles. If the rifle didn't shoot well with that scope, there was something wrong with the rifle.. That scope is now enjoying retirement on my 1956 30-06 featherweight. It's one of the original FFII with ballistic plex reticle models, made in the 90's: A day at the range with a couple pre 64's. Both topped with Leupold dual dovetail lows and Burris FFII 3-9x40 rifle scopes: This isn't a pre 64, but it's wearing a Burris FFII with ballistic plex reticle. CZ550 American 9.3x62mm: Here's proof that they hold zero very well. Even from a big cartridge like the 9.3 cream puff...: Sorry for the old picture. I know a lot of you have seen it. My favorite hunting rifle wearing its Burris: Its not as accurate as my pre 64's but it gets the job done.... I wish I had all my old pictures from photobucket, but at least I still have some of these in Imgur and on my computer.. As far as the older Burris fullfield rifle scopes, my buddy used one on his pre 64 fwt. It was a 3-9x40 with the ranging reticle in it. He finally pulled it off and put a Swaro on the rifle. He has more money than I do though... As always, I usually suggest a good set of Leupold dual dovetail mounts and rings and you'll be golden... Lows work great for anything 3-9x40...
