I’m picking up primo quick release sticks.

I also ordered a olive colored Kagoule rain jacket from Swazi Clothing in NZ. I wanted something I could wear besides camo for hunting.

Swazi has a pretty good reputation and the gear is a bit pricey. Has excellent reviews.

I have pretty much all I need without overpacking.

Thought I might kick some life back into this as the season is now upon us.
Hoping to see some after action reports and stories.
Anticipation is growing and I'm looking forward to some cooler air.
Good hunting and safe travels.

Plan on being on the ferry next Friday tonight for an hunt starting on the 15th. My first trip to NL used an outfitter 6 hours from the boat. It was a scenic and pleasant drive.
This time we are doing a fly in, about a half hour up the road from Port aux Basques, with Mountain Top Outfitters out of Doyle. We are planning a casual travel schedule as well, getting into NL a day early. Really don't want to be late for the flight out to the cabin!
I have very much enjoyed time on the rock and look forward to having a little more time to "look around."
Some interesting weather in the forecast, but it will work out one way or the other.

We are booked for 2019 again with Red Indian Lake Outfitters. I'll be using a .62 Jaeger Flintlock.

Taking the 270?

Rug3,
Always a wicked tough decision for me, but taking a 35 Whelen and since the forecast is showing potential (hurricane?) for serious rain, an old 1899 300 Savage topped with an nearly as old Redfield peep.
The 270's are shooting well enough, but I have an affinity for the Whelen as I have been reading a bunch of Townsend's articles written during the 40's and 50's.
Last year, I had M. Forbes do a complete work over on a 300 Win Mag CLR, with this hunt in mind. The rifle is really a shooter, and i find myself a surprised that it is not going.
Can't say there is anything rational about any of my decisions lately. I am delighted to be out on my own recognizance and happy to be greeting another hunting season.
Hitting the road Thursday morning.

I was booked for a NFLD trip again this year, but the house needed a new roof, so the hunt will have to wait...I did draw a Cow tag for Ontario though...

50lbs is hard to pack for a moose hunt. Between my rifle, ammo and boots I'm pushing 20lbs...

Last week the success was 50% at the camp.

Windy and rain, a little warm.

Overall among all the camps they had 48 sightings.

Leaving Thursday at 8:00 a.m., staying in St. John NB first night.

Our camp was 4 for 4 on bulls last week. Group the week before filled all their tags as well.
Second day of high winds making for sideways rain, and moderate temperatures, I took a young bull at about 65 yards with my old 1899 300 Savage. Thought it was a cow when I began the stalk. Other bulls were 4, 12, and 13 points.
On Wed afternoon, after we had filled out tags, we could see 5 moose on the surrounding hills, out the front window of the cabin. Guessing the next group is enjoying a great hunt.

Fishdog - Congratulations,
Keuka Lake Sauce with a Moose steak sure is a fine table fare.
What did you have the "old 1899 300 Savage" loaded with?

Rug3,
I used 150 gr Partitions loaded over 41 gr of Varget.
Curious to note that I recovered a near perfectly mushroomed bullet, and so did 2 of the guys that used 300 mags with 180 gr bullets, particularly the guy that used Trophy bonded bullets. He recovered 2 of them, nicely mushroomed, from the moose he took at around 200 yards.
Had some grilled backstrap, with the secret family sauce, for dinner earlier tonight. It exceeded expectations.

Hope your trip goes well and your hunt successful.
You certainly have asked the questions and been diligent in your preparations.

We left CT yesreday and stayed the night in St. John NB.

The CBP and Canadian customs were very helpful and had us on our way pretty efficiently since there 4 of us checking in and Plenty of officers.

As I write this we are in line at the ferry terminal in the pouring rain, no tailgating tonight!

My son did all the driving and a great job, it’s been raining all day, torrential at times.

I couldn’t find my knife so I ordered one from Vince and it was routed to the Burlington VT distribution, my local PO was great, got the knife; they called me at 6:30 yesterday morning but it doesn’t end there.

UPS lost the overnight envelope and check so my wife is sending Vince a check tomorrow. I purchased 3-4 knives from him.

He was very understanding!

We are very happy that we left CT yesterday and took two days, well worth it.

My friend is leaving MASS tonight and it will be a marathon drive, they are on tomorrow nights ferry. Not a good idea, he is 70, his hunting buddy is 75 and a diabetic.

As it was I came down with a nasty head cold yesterday morning, slept poorly but the good news is the Zirtec helped.

The guys are all excited as we get close to crossing Cabot Straits. To be continued....
