I've seen the serial # date of manufacture chart on the Ruger website and the SN on my old M77 doesn't seem to fit.

Can anybody fill me in on #70-00720? Date of manufacture and/or any other info? It's a 6mm Rem.

Thanks in advance.

According to the fine print on the website, the serial numbers listed for year of manufacture are an approximate and sometimes blocks of serial numbers are out of sequence and leave the factory years later. Yours is most likely late 1960s very early 1970s production.

It would have to be a very early model. With that #, is it a Flat bolt? Should be pre-warning rifle. Does it have sights? Possibly a hole in the bolt (grasping at straws with this one as I have only seen 1 in my life and don't have a clue as the ser. #'s)? I went to the site and see what you mean as the early ser. #'s are missing.

If you can't get it figured out, you can go to rugerforum.com. When you get there, look up a guy whose forum name is Chet15. He publishes a Ruger newsletter called RENE (Red Eagle News Exchange). He keeps a list of Ser. #'s of various older Rugers and would likely be interested in your rifle. He does this as a way to preserve the history of these firearms. If you don't want to register on that site to get hold of him, let me know and I will be happy to do it if I have your permission.

Good luck with a great rifle! Eddie

Thanks for the great info Shooter. Yes the bolt handle is flat, no hole though. No sights, just the deep blue pencil barrel. By all means please do find out what you can for me, you've tweaked my curiosity. Feel free to PM me if you happen to come up with anything.

Thanks again.

Oh yeah...it being a flat bolt, it wouldn't be a hollowbolt. The hollowbolt is much rarer than flatbolt. I am about to put the info on the other site, but I would think that the 6mm is going to be a rather tough rifle in the flatbolt. I have a 243 Win. in the flatbolt and have owned one other one and it also was in the 243. I have a 6mm in a tang safety 77, but it has a custom barrel and I bought it used so don't know how it came from the factory. But we'll see what the experts say.
