I know I have asked before about Sako values and did find some info by doing a search... But looking for fresh help.
I found a Sako L61R in 300WM, action looks unfired although I am sure it has been. Stock is dinged and has a poorly fitted pad but refinished it would nice as the wood is kind of dark with some streaks. Does include some kind of ugly ring mounts, no scope. Has front sight but can't see where a rear sight was ever mounted. Bluing is 90-95%. Not marked Bofors steel.
Price is $600
I got a feeling this is just a so-so price.

I bought one last year up here in Canada in NRA excellent condition for $1,000 cdn or $850 US. No rings or sights, perfect oil finished stock. It's my primary hunting rifle.
Sakos can vary a lot in price I find. I bought three Sakos in Feb...a nearly mint AI 223 with a cheap 4-12 Bushnell for $900CDN, a very nice AIII 30-06 with B&L scope for $900 and an AV in 338 Win Mag for $750....with rings and some extras.
I'd say it's a fair deal for $600US...

At $600 it is a good deal. I bought a mint condition Sako Fiberclass last week for $650 with bases and rings and I thought that it was a good deal. As stated above, it is getting harder and harder to find Sako's under $700. Good luck
ahhhhh...the Fibreclass..McMillan stock and all...still kicking myself for selling the one I had in 7-08.....crazy.
Rob....dang I shouldn't have posted what I paid for them...now you and martin won't buy them from me...:-)..martin is a Sako lover too....I sold him at least one...

If the barrel looks virtually unfired...just a bit of a stock tidy becasue you want it to look pretty...for that money BUY IT! Before someone else does...

More info. Serial # on the L61R is 454xx. No sight hood. LOP is 13" (a hair short). Says Finnbear on the barrel, Made in Finland, 300 Win Mag. Nothing else. Like I said bluing is 95% but stock needs work. BTW- has the open bolt shroud and Sako rings but they are ugly looking things with a big ol screw to hold them. Also they had a AIII in 300WM. Stock has some spacers to increase LOP to 14" but just needs those removed and a new pad installed. Wood is same as other dinged but it too looks hardly fired. Both bores are bright and crisp... Bluing is shiny at muzzle. Neither have a high gloss finish but the L61R seems a little nicer. Same price although they might go down to $550 on the AIII serial was six digit starting with a 5 (IIRC) but didn't write it down.
Anymore input?

Dave, with the 5 digit serial number it is a pre-Garcia rifle. Those Sako rings may be ugly but the lows and mediums will get you a minimum of $50 on Ebay - if they are high rings (will have a small circular hole in the body of the ring), those will get you $80-100 without trying too hard. Factor that into the overall cost of the rifle and it is starting to look like a deal worth doing. Comparing those two rifles I would take the L61R over the AIII for no other reason than one is a pre-Garcia and the other a Stoeger import (no flies on the AIII - both the AIII and L61R will fit into the same stocks). In the auctions section I think Rick has a McMillan Sako classic stock, minus pad and paint, for $200 - that would be a sweet rig.

Hello Dave, Your Sako was made in 1969 long after Sako stopped stamping the Bofors Steel logo on the barrel as they lost a patent infridgement law suit. If it has the 3 lug barrel, it's a pre-Garcia and as such, has the same exact steel in the barrel of those marked "Bofors". There are also 5 digit SN actions that were made during the Garcia era in 1972, and marked Garcia import..... these are fairly rare. Your Sako is pre-Garcia and well worth the price. Front sight hoods pop up on ebay from time to time and usually bring 100 bucks, Regards, Rick.
