Does anyone know the relative strength of the Buffalo classic H&R rifle. I have one and would like to work up some loads that are at the marlin 1895level.

I have heard that they are as strong as the Marlins but would like to hear something more definitive

Thanks,

Lefty C

Think the frame needs to be an SB-2 frame that the high pressure rifles were built on, not sure if that's a SB-2 frame or the SB-1 shotgun frame on those. Maybe worth a call to Remington, but not sure they'll know anymore since they stopped the accessory barrel program.

You can go over to GBO. At one time they had a thread with photos of what the back of the receiver looked like as an SB1 and SB2.

Garret ammo makes some pretty hot 45/70 ammo and the NEF and H&R rifles are given the ok there . Just got one Saturday , will be running some of thier ammo through it next week end .

IF it checks out that you can shoot that level of load please come back and tell us about the experience

Mine is strong enough to make the case hardened butt plate painfull. wink i am using some 405 Remmy with a stout charge of Benchmark. Take your time and really 'Enjoy' the recoil.

I also have Marlin 1895. It also handles that load pretty nicely. Bit of rubber on the 1895.

Worst that can happen is it pops open and embeds a 45-70 case in your forehead.

I'd go for it.

There is just something that in my not extensively math educated mind that says,

H&R+Hinge single shot+45-70 at high Pressure=DON'T DO IT.

Buy a Roger #1.
If your gonna play,
your gonna pay!

Pay with your wallet to get a safe, quality gun for your use.
Don't ruin that H&R, and/or yourself.

That said, they were chambered in 500S&W.
It might be ok.

any SB2 frame will handle big pressure

you can safely shoot a 45/70 loaded to Marlin Lever levels.

Think: the SB2 will handle 500S&W at 50K, with a larger base with translates to greater breech thrust.

so a 45/70 loaded to 50K would not be as heavy as that.

BUT, the configuration of the BC may make it an interesting adventure.

with a L O N G barrel, you can get some amazing velocities from the 45/70.

SB1 frame is solid in the back where the stock bolt goes. SB2 is not.

I was shooting 300 trainers at 2725 out of mine. It hurts. Shot it today with 405 grain at 1800. I had 2 touching at 100 and about 2.5 at 200. Ed k

I have shot double powder charges of the published Ruger #1 loads [higher than guide gun loads] in a Handi RIfle 45/70.
It destroys the brass as it flows into the extractor relief cut that is not perfect for the extractor.
The recoil causes the action to pop open.
This is way too much recoil for a human. Even the Trapdoor load [wimpier than guide gun loads] kicks too hard.
I was not shouldering the rifle in the overload work up.

Prior to that 18 years ago I got help from my father, the gun designer chief engineer at PAC CAR and from a mechanical engineering professor to calculate the strength of the handi rifle.
I did thick wall hoop stress on the chamber and section modulus calculations on the breech face. I did double shear calculations on the break action pin.

https://rec.guns.narkive.com/tIUDxC0G/nef-rifle-45-70-govt-vs-marlin-1895-guide-gun

shot 8) 32 gr, 87,841 psi, 1911 fps, case head expansion .0025", case head separating

Looks like I had Quickload in 2000.

Very good advice . People have been swapping barrels on these rifles for a while now. These were not designed for this originally. Ed k
