Is it the octagon barrel 308 with the gaudy butt plate? If so, and in the condition you describe, I’d pass on that one. As you said, they made a bunch and another one will come your way before you know it.

These guns have never brought a lot of attention, even when they first hit the market. Patience, you will find another in better condition.

Also, in terms of "shootability", look at the caliber (.308) and then look at the skinny crescent butt plate and tell me what you see! A recipe for pain and burgeoning flinches. I got rid of a 99A .30-30 once because it was a miserable little thing to shoot.

I would only buy a 75th as a collectable and only NIB with all papers. If used I'd think $500-600 might be top money.

Commemorative rifles, especially the heaps of 94s that were put out by Winchester, certainly seem to be the "turds in the punch bowl" at the party.

The Centennial guns are .300 Sav except for 1 special order .308.

The 75th guns were all .308s which was a big strike against them. What caliber would you have preferred? I don't know what the mindset at Savage was in the mid-70's, but, it is what it is at this point, .308 is a great deer cartridge here in WI. The 75th and Centennial's as .303's would probably please the traditionalists. Including me.

I’ll jump in here. I think Savage’s intent was to keep the 99 going as long as they could with the best cartridge they could make work. And in this country of “there’s no substitute for cubic inches” that usually means the hottest round they could stoke into the 99’s rotary action. Now I’m not criticizing the 308 or Savage’s efforts in anyway whatsoever. The 308 is a classic in its own right. But I have always felt that as an icon of American firearms history and function, it never got any better than the 99 in 300 Savage. It’s a great round that will do just about everything the 308 will do and it just flat out works in the 99. Buts that’s just me and armed with that perspective any 99 in 308 carries marginal interest for me.
