On the hunt for a new deer bolt gun...
Ive been looking at 243, 270, 25-06 and the ol 308. As you can see I dont need any fancy caliber thats $4 a round, Just a reliable deer killer. Im also not trying to have a high recoil caliber (ie, 30-06, no reason to shoot an 06 when you can shoot a 308 in its place)
I dont need a long range caliber either, I doubt ill ever poke past 200 yards in my life (unless a western trip comes into play). But, Even with a gun i try to get close...
Just looking for some feedback on these as I havent used any of them aside from 308
There is also a chance that a bear could be targeted too since our deer overlaps with bear for a week. But, we've flattened several 500+ pound bears with 30-30s and none of these fall behind a 3030 so im not concerned with that....

Any of them will kill anything on the north American continent.
If recoil is a factor as you said, the .243 will do nicely.

270,308,25-06,243.............in that order, although any of them will be perfectly fine.

I have used the 243 ,with great results,all 1 shot kills. look at the 7mm-08 also .great round

I am in the same boat and chose a 25/06 with Barnes bullets as the best of all worlds. Light recoil, flat shooting if needed, but full penetration if shooting a big bear. Same could be said of other calibers, but I love a 25/06.
Sounds like almost any cartridge would work for you at those ranges.

25.o6 or 308 win work great. I would add 6.5 creed as well

All of them will work fine. The 243 is probably less forgiving on bad shot placement. The 30 calibers have more choices in bullet choice. Theres really not a wrong answer here.

25-06, 243, 308, 270 to my taste. My son has used 80gr TTSX in a 25-06 to kill huge-bodied bull moose, a brown bear, bull caribou, mountain goat, and deer. It should work just fine on deer anywhere.
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

I almost mentioned it in my post, because that's what I'll be carrying come this Saturday. But, the OP didn't mention it, so I didn't figure he was interested in it. It's a good choice, and it's not going anywhere soon.

The 25-06 would be my first choice. The 243 second unless recoil is a problem, then the 243 would get the nod.

You didn't mention a budget or the type of rifle you're looking for i.e bolt CRF or push feed, nor did you mention if you wanted a lightweight rifle or a standard weight rifle. First, find the type of rifle you want and then consider the calibers that are available in that rifle. My recommendation would be a Winchester M70 in .270. Other good choices are the CZ 550, if you can find one used, or the Ruger M77, though the CZ and the Ruger are a bit heavier.

If you don't want a .223, just get a .308. It's got the biggest and cheapest selection of ammo at Walmart.
