I am considering a dot type scope for a Kimber 84 in 308. Primary use will be close in woods shots on whitetail and hogs. What sight have you all used and what mount for a similar application?

I have an Aimpoint 9000s with a 4 min dot mounted on a Kimber 84m with Warne mounts. For serious hunting the Aimpoints are the way to go. Most other red dot type sights are fine for playing at the range but will leave you wanting in the field especially in poor light or longer range. Using a 100 yard smallbore target, (an 8in black circle) I can get the Kimber to meet its accuracy guarantee with the Aimpoint.

I've tried a couple of the red dot and reflex type sights and don't care for them. I find that for close cover woods a 1-3, 1-4 scope works well for me, no batteries to worry about, huge FOV and still have the ability to turn the power up if I have to thread the needle or happen go get to a spot that is more open. I will say that I did have a 1.25-4x24mm scope with an Ill. Dot that was nice on dark days in the forest but not enough to have to deal with the size, weight and batteries.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I have a Burris Fastfire III on my Marlin 1894 P 44Mag.Perfect for snap or jump shooting in thick woods or swamp.I also use a Ultra Dot Matchdot on a Marlin 1894C 357 Mag.The Match Dot gives you choice of 4 different size dots and 11 different brightness settings.I like this sight but it is larger that the Burris.Either will get the job done and are tough.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

How are the aimpoints at last light and in dark timber?
I have never used one but I like the concept for my intended purpose.

Red dots are inferior to scopes in low light. A better choice for that is an illuminated low-power scope. The illumination can actually make seeing other stuff more difficult in very low light, so you should try it at different brightness levels and power settings to see what works best under different conditions. Could be that OFF is the best setting when it's close to darkness if the reticle is bold enough. Where red dots seem to shine is for moving game like driven boar. Based on videos, that seems to be done in good light, but that could just be when they choose to film it. I had a 2moa dot sight on a .270 for a bit. Never hunted it, but it worked quite well at the range up to 100 yards. Like any magnified optic, a scope helps you see through brush and pick holes to shoot through.
What fresh Hell is this?

IMHO where a reddot shines is on a handgun. Way easier than using an EER scope.
The smaller RDS I don't care for on handgun, but closer to the eye on a rifle, the 2 MOA stuff would be tolerable. I'd like an Aimpount, but will proly get a Sig Romeo 5 for a micro.
That for rifle.
On pistol (TC Contender) I'd still hold out for a real Aimpoint PRO.
