Well he shot a nice 8 pointer tonight! he made a nice 75 yard shot after I stopped the buck with a "bahhhhhhhhh". Then shot him again on a dead run at 85 yards. Pretty good for a 10 year old! all 3 of my kids have got 8 pointers this year. That is a fantastic year!

I didn’t do anything. Couple of kids doing it on their own! I was pretty excited about that.

Lots of land in the Black Hills. That’s what my tag was for. Local folks were easy to talk to and pretty dang helpful actually. Ryan was the most helpful. There were literally deer everywhere I looked for them. The buck to doe ratio was lots of does. Lol. Sometimes I’d see 7 or 8 at a crack. Even in the woods. One thang that surprised me with the bucks was they could climb like billy goats if they had to. I also saw them in areas I wouldn’t have normally looked but would be driving to take a look at a burn or cool looking rocks or something and I’d jump deer. It was an amazing trip. Exactly what I had hoped for.

The thing with the locals is they road hunted. I hunted starting on opening morning which was a Thursday. I didn’t see any other hunters until Saturday morning. We didn’t see any deer hunters even when we were scouting the week prior. They get a month to hunt with a black hills tag, so they didn’t really get after it until the weekend.

It’s an awesome, beautiful place that I will hunt as much as possible.

Great Info Tom.....Thanks.

One last question, for now, how long did it take to draw the tag?

Jeff,

It took me 4 years in the Black Hills. But....I was applying for “any deer” instead of “any whitetail”. It takes 2 years or so to draw any whitetail. Much longer for the mule deer tag.

I also have been applying for a West River tag in a low draw area. It’s been 4 years. I’m pretty sure next year will do it.

Yep. You can buy points for $10. You can apply for a tag and there is an option to buy a point if you’re not drawn.

The other good thing about SD is you only have to pay the application fee of $10. If you don’t draw there is no hit on your card. Unlike other states where you send the license fee in and they’ll refund you if you don’t draw.

That is the story at our camp also. A fawn was seen but not shot. It has been snowing every day and soon it will add up to a bunch, no it already is a bunch. Hope everyone is doing well.
