Hah!! Joe just sent me a pic of him posing with a dandy buck he shot with his Malcolm-equipped .22 HP. 130 pounds, one shot DRT.

I still have my 32-40 model 1899A sn 98691 which was shipped direct to Malcolm Telescope Mfg. Co. on April 26, 1909. Gene B. utilized existing holes and mounted a Malcolm scope for me. One of my favorite guns for sure.

I don't know how functional they are for shooting, but an 1899 with an old period Stevens or Malcolm scope is just a cool looking gun.

Very cool. I’ll try to shoot an animal or 2 with iron sights first then look for mounts and scope if I can find a deal.

Malcolm advertised buying scoped guns direct from them, had the Savage listed already in 1895 -

For vintage scopes the Malcolm have been considered higher quality than Stevens, but the eye relief on all I've had is noticeably shorter than any Stevens and they seem uncomfortably close to my eyeball when the view is good, also Stevens scope mounts allow the scope to slide forward if it hits something (like maybe your forehead or an eyeball), Malcolm mounted there scopes solid.... For a vintage look that you could comfortably shoot in a gun setup for Malcolm mounts you could use their mounts (if 3/4") and a Stevens scope.

Just an FYI. If interested and haven’t yet tried, Savages “Historical Society” can only be reached by mail. I found that out after 15 minutes on hold. Can’t email them either.

Just because Gary brought it up, the "Dandy" WV buck I took with my Malcolm topped 1899 H 22HP, was taken with the tang sight.. The scope and tang both shoot to the same point of impact, about an inch or so to the left, but the tang is much more clear. I was very happy when I lettered this one. The discription on GB said "barn find condition with no name, unmarked, period scope". I took a chance and when I took it out in bright sunlight for some pics, I saw 4X on it. Then I looked close and saw Malcolm on the tube. So, to me, the letter vindicated and verified that it was indeed an original Malcolm. The letter stated that the original consignee was the Malcolm Rifle Telescope Co. Yes letters can be worth it. Most of mine are so plane I wouldn't waste the money to letter them.

Interesting find. I was trying to track some info on my gun which originally sold to Gus Habich Sporting Goods. Gus Habich was apparently also a gunsmith and I found reference to him trying to hire a plating specialist for nickel, brass and copper. Wonder if that’s where the nickel plating on my gun came from. Maybe also the scope mount.
