I can't find the SAAMI specs on 338/06 anywhere. For the 30/06 they are 60Kpsi, and for the 270 they are 65K. In a modern firearm 65Kpsi shouldn't be excessive. For any load data that says 65Kpsi is safe, that means that's max safe average pressure...IOW the speed limit...exceding by slightly wont blow things up...not suggesting you should attempt to exceed...but SAAMI doesn't put out numbers that are the absolute ceiling. How do you know if you're there? Pressure testing equipment. If not that, then published velocities should be your benchmark.

I think it is 60k for the 338-06.

DSC, absolutely. I took the 338-06AI to Africa in 04 and Wy for elk in 02. I used the 200gr Ballistic tIp behind R-15 at 2850fps with great success. If I were to rebuild, I probably wouldn't rebuild to AI, just use the standard version as most folks are getting the same velocities with the standard version..2800 with a 200BT or 2900 with a 180 TSX will kill anything it's pointed at given correct bullet placement..POwders like 4064,R-15, VV140, Varget all can shoot good in the 338-06, mine just seemed to like R-15 best..start at about 55grs and work up slowly..with 200gr bullets..mine never liked he 210 Nosler probably due to the 1/12 twist..something else I wouldn't do again..stay with 1/10 twist.

Bill I am curious did you find any of the 200 NBT's in any of the deceased?
I use that bullet in my G33/40 in 338/06 for elk and all comers.
Thx

MARK, The only bullets recovered came out of the kudu..both perfect mushrooms at ranges of 250 and 425yds...got exits on everything else including zebra..the bullet was perfect and had I not had a scope get shook to death, probablt everything would have only taken 1 shot each.. Bill

The Hodgdon big book Data is for the AI,take a look at the drawing. Ken Water's Pet Load is for the AI,as well
I went heavier with my 338-06,225gr Honady and used Big Game.Others have used N-550. With the AI you could try H-4350 (SC)

I too have had good results using Re 15 with 200-210 grain bullets and H 4350 with those of 225 and up. Also, limited experience with H 380. I haven't yet tried the Ramshot powders.
