I've been looking at them lately myself. Interested to see the results of this thread. A lot of gun for the money.

As part of the Blaser group, The Mauser M18 barrels are made in the same shop as the Blaser and Sauer barrels. This rifle is extremely accurate and a lot of rifle for the money. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-fcTUmQKXo&app=desktop

Good video. Enjoyed watching that.

"For the money" isn't that big a draw for me personally (not that there are piles of money laying around here!). More and more it's more about getting something I really want, or that fits a specific purpose or need (!). A good, inexpensive rifle can be a need of course, and from all I've seen, the M18 and its cousin from Sauer meet that very well. Haven't seen one in the flesh, but from pics and videos nothing about them seems cheap, and the accuracy and triggers have gotten great reviews. Tikka better watch out. There's another worth looking at from Franchi, I think, but the M18 gets my vote on appearance.
Warning! If you take a look at the Mauser catalog, be sure to stay away from the M12 and especially the M03s. Heady stuff.

The 98 Standard Diplomat is a looker for sure. They are definitely great looking rifles. Would love to be able to justify laying out the $10k or whatever it is they are going for.

I'd LOVE a 98 Standard Expert in 8x57is...with a GOOD 4x optic. But then, I could take the VZ-24 to Alaska for what one costs. Of course that would involve having that much cash hanging around...did I mention I've got 3 kids under 12?

I don't always shoot Mausers, but when I do...I prefer VZ-24s.

I love my Mausers, but they are old. 98s and 96s form an era of the past.
Yet of all the Mausers I own (10 in all) all of them shoot very well and 3 of them shoot so tightly that I doubt I could find many factory rifles at any price made today that would out shoot them.
I just love Mausers.

Was looking at the Mauser catalog and then on GB. The M03s are out of reach for a retired telephone man, but there are some very nice M12s with walnut or synthetic stocks for more or less the price of a nice Kimber. I didn't see any M12s with the cocking safety, which is a nice feature. Mostly just window shopping as I'm all rifled-up and am in the process of passing on a few that might never see the woods, in my hands anyway.
