if you want to treat yourself, "they shall never grow old". 11/18 was the 100 year commemeration of WWI. About four years ago peter jackson who did the "ring" movies was commissioned by the british war museum to relit a bunch of the old film, and colorize it. it tell the story in britain of pre war, recruitment, and life in the trenches. quite a bit of the film i reconized, but hadn't seen in color. Extremely well done.
Most have heard of trenchfoot, but i have never seen an example until this movie.
A lot of the film i am sure was/has not been seen by the british people, just too graphic.
It brings out the point the british government was not telling the truth in trying to recruit bodies.
one of a number of things i didn't know, is the average guy humped 150 rounds of .303, basically 15 clips on each side.
recommend the documentary.

World War I was the death of Western Civilization. It ended it. We just don’t realize it yet, but we’re already dead on our feet.

Just yesterday finished reading this book, outstanding description of the horrors of WWI from the perspective of both the Generals and the common soldiers. A "must read" for anyone interested in WWI.

Where did you watch it. I've seen the trailer online, but only saw it was playing in select theaters.

i have a good son in law knowing my passion for military history. Saw it in a local theater.

It was a little bit hard watching some of the scottish highlanders in battle. I have the sidearm of one killed during the battle of the somme, and a lugar p8 artillery from a unit commanded by a distant relative also at the somme. Kept wondering if i was seeing their pictures in the film.

Saw it. Those clips of trench foot were hideous. How about those teeth?

well
as these things go
decided to do a little more research on the captain whose revolver i have.
been tracing him for a long time, and after having it on my mind from seeing those scotsmen in the documentary, went to google again.
must of hit the right comination of words, because i found the names of his siblings, and wrote an email to the newspaper in the area they lived.
long shot, but never know.

for those who see it, some of the scenes are reconizable from you tube video in black and white. one section showing a hospital/aid station is still there, park of a park now.
another shows a bunch of troops sitting on the side of a trench/hillside. i just watched a you tube where they actually recovered the names of some of those men.
I learned a little, one brief scene showed a man wearing a chest ammo carrier with a lot of pouches. I have that same carrier in the collection but never thought of it dating to WWI.
The trench foot, and the teeth were pretty bad, so was the food, loosely worded they were given to eat. And the treatment of the horses got to me.

Think about this, started the war horseback with glances, finished with tanks and airplanes

you look at that pretty farmland today, and realize there are thousands of men under the earth there in pieces. it's sobering.

Check out Dan Carlin’s podcast called Hardcore History.
Blueprint for Armageddon is his podcast on the history of WW1.
Approx 20 hours of truly captivating listening.

WW1 still has an effect on my life. My Grandad fought in it for 4 years, my Grandmother worked the munition factorys of London, her brothers were killed in the trenches . When I grew up the WW2 vets were my Dad's age and there were lots of WW1 vets around. I listened., if they ever spoke.
