HeavyBarrel, I hope your current load choice shoots as well as the old AA3100 did. Where I hunt I want all the velocity I can get, sometimes I forget not everyone has the same need.

Update. Been shooting the rifle I mentioned shot the great ten shot group with the 3100. I loaded 5 each at 58,58.5 and 59grs of H4831. Loaded all at the same measurement off the ogive that the 3100 loads were seated. I was getting really tight groups with the 58 and 58.5 grain loads but would always get a flyer that would take groups to 1 3/4" or so. The last group I shot was the 59gr and all five were .900 center to center. I am going to clean gun and I have 59.5, 60, 60.5, and 61 grains loaded up 5 of each, and will give them a try next range session. Looks like I am getting somewhere with the gun but it has been a little troublesome, as I have tried numerous factory rounds with inconsistency, I might get a great group and the next one open up. Gun is factory other than the trigger being lightened to 3lb, but it also sits on some front end pressure pads that I figure are causing a little bit of an issue.

Have you tried checking the bullet concentricity of factory loads? That often makes a big difference.

A concentricy gauge is a tool that I need to purchase.

Ahh the good old days of 3100 especially at 5-8!bucks a pound if I remember correctly.

I also was a big fan of AA3100 back in the 80's. I used it mainly in a 25--06 with 120 gr bullets. IIRC Bob Hagel wrote an acritical in I think Handloader magazine that 3100 was the SAME as IMR 4831. Coarse at the time he wrote it, could be lots of changes to today

Have you tried checking the bullet concentricity of factory loads? That often makes a big difference. Yeah, may not be as concentric as one would think. I use a Sinclair gauge and TruAngle tool DF

I do too, but even with both accuracy can be affected by uneven neck thickness.
Think I'll do my next Campfire column on factory ammo. There are bunch of factors even most loonies don't understand.
