The biggest cost expenditures in the national budget are the pentagon, social security, and Medicare.
Folks saying cutting funding stuff like the arts and the interior department is silly. It's like rearranging deck chairs on a ship that's going down.
But the discussion at hand is the national debt.
I don't think it can be fixed at this point. We have reached the point of no return. It's going over.
It's gonna get ugly. Like really ugly.
But enjoy life, friends, and family while you can.

I wish we could give California to China in exchange for forgiving our debt. CA wants to go full Communism anyway, so it sounds like a win for everyone. China won't hesitate to build a wall!

Well, a BIG tax cut for the rich certainly didn't help. Paul Ryan was a major opponent of the Federal deficit and debt, but he flipped and supported the cuts. Tax reform was needed, but certainly not one that mainly helped the rich and real estate developers (can you think of one?).

That's crazy talk. Cali is a big state. Give cali liberals to the Chinese for slaves or to make crackers out of, and keep our dirt.

Ummm, both the Social Security and Medicare programs were passed by a Democrat president. And both programs were never really gonna be solvent. True, it has been several both Democrat and Republican administrations the last 50 plus years who have kicked the can down the road. But your rhetoric against the current administration is not gonna fix the problem. He didn't get us into this situation. Look at the past administrations and overlay that with the increases in national debt spikes occurred. Very interesting to see it.

Tax cuts will always benefit those who pay the most taxes unless it is a wealth redistribution scheme of the left.

Tell the foreign owned banking cartel to take a hike. Close. We call in the debt that the rest of the world owes us for bailing their asses out of WWII. Wipe the slate clean with Europe, China, Japan, etc. You really don't know to whom or what I'm referring, when I mentioned the foreign banking cartel. Do you?

I think we need to make more AND spend less.
I'm not sure why, now that the economy is booming, there seems to be even less concern about getting a handle on the deficit. It sure seems like it's more fun to point fingers than to take responsibility.
We are going to have to suck it up and make some sacrifices and not keep spending the money of future generations.

It will not end pretty. Both parties are toxic and cannot resist the urge to spend money or give away freebies in exchange for votes... the USA has about 20 more years before collapse You're optimistic.

Or, better yet. Just default on our debt. What are the other countries going to do about it. Will China stop selling us anything? Hell no. If they did their entire economy would go into to the toilet overnight. Same with Europe, Japan, and Russia. and they are all in debt also...….sky is falling......what is going to happen?...all the countries going to close up shop?.....world come to an end?...no ..we will just keep chugging along, because there is nothing else the world can do....this is global... 10..20..years from now we will be in 30..40...whatever trillion in debt......saying this doesn't look good.....world leaders (I use that term loosely)….will look at each other...ok do over.....solved……...bob

There is no paying off that much debt. The plan appears to be letting inflation devalue the debt enough to keep us afloat until after we're dead. Good luck, grandkids.

Might not call in their debt, but just assume ownership of our outside assets. External debt by country link

Haven't you read about (a) record numbers of new jobs created and (b) wages climbing faster than the cost of living for a change? That's becuse of the recent tax cuts.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

If they did their entire economy would go into to the toilet overnight. Same with Europe, Japan, and Russia. Defaulting on governmnent bonds would bankrupt millions of US citizens and corporations as well as people in other countries. The result would make the 1929 crash and Great Depression look like a Sunday School picnic. Unfortunately there will be such a crrash, not too many years from now. Unfortunately I don't think the government will do ANYTHING. They have a very short time horizon. Since a crash will come "later," they will just kick the can down the road for now. So it WILL all crash. Not one of the candidates for 2020 is commenting on the recent report by the Trustees of the Social Security System that in 2034--15 years from now--the system will have to cut benefits unless there is a tax increase. When the crash happens, they will blame it on "those guys who didn't do anything many years ago." And that's nothing compared with the state and union pension funds that will default.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.
