Three months ago, I bought a Marlin Guide Gun with a 18" ported barrel, caliber 45-70...A few weeks ago I bought a 22" model 1895S barrel from Numrich...I sent the gun to Marlin and they installed the barrel, put on a set of sights that I didn't even ask for, and returned my original barrel all for $125 shipping included...Here are some Pix of that gun...Maybe the only straight grip 1895S???

That looks an awful lot like my original 1895 except for the checkering and the abominable safety.

Sweet! Have always like the guide guns but thought the barrel was too short for my tastes. That gets it where it needs to be. TM

Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

That was the only drawback for me too, the short barrel and the ported didn't help either...It is the way I like it now...

Isn't the point of the guide gun the short barrel?

Theoretically, I suppose it is but I am not a guide and I do not hunt from horseback using a saddle holster or anything like that...I got the gun for $300 and set it up for what my taste demands..
Besides I have always liked being a bit different and out of the main stream...I like the idea of having the straight stock and longer barrel.

Why not? I can't leave any gun alone myself. There's always something that can be improved, it seems.

Enjoy.

As I said, your's now looks like my original early '70s 1895 did (before it became part of Alaska's wilderness). I really liked that rifle as it was. It took two 45-70s and two compact bolt guns to replace it! So now I hunt with my Ruger #1 45-70, I can't sell either my Model Seven 358 or M77 375-350 since I'd take a big hit on them. And my stainless Guide Gun (unported) does a great job in it role as a guide gun. (With logic like that, I suppose it's little wonder that wives don't understand when we make some of the "sensible" suggestions we do.)

When I had a ported guide gun I investigated the same conversion (as I hated the porting too) but opted to trade off the guide gun for what turns out to be one of my best shooting guns, and bought a 1895GS which I love. Still a fine looking rifle with the long barrel.

Why do you guys hate the porting so much? Also, Klikitarik where are you at? I am on Lazy Mountain about 12 miles out of Palmer.

the WHAT is a shout as in "I can't hear you from shooting a blasted ported barrel too much!"

have one ported and one without, but the porting doesn't bother me enough on it to send it off and have a new barrel put on it and then have to reparkerize it.

Someday I got to post some pics of the danged thing, the stock is pretty beat up, but I drive a rifle pretty hard.

You don't see a whole bunch of them parkerized.

I can't afford to shoot a 45/70 much so shouldn't be much of a problem then cry I am curious to see which is louder, the Ported Guide gun or my AR with the infamous Bushmaster Mini-Y comp.
