Hi all can anyone tell me if all pre 64 mod 70s super grades had jeweled bolts and marked on the underside of the barrel are there any other ways to prove a true super grade other than the obvious thank you

I can't say as regards the bolt jeweling but the Winchester books state that not all Super Grade barrels were stamped "Super".

Per Rule, “The extractor, breech bolt body, extractor ring/bolt stop extension and magazine follower were ‘jeweled’ or engine-turned, a common cosmetic treatment for SG rifles after 1954”. The ‘SUPER’ barrel stamp was used on ‘browned’ barrels intended for SG’s after 1954. The reversed ‘S’ stamp was frequently found on recoil lugs of receivers intended for SG’s from 1955 to 1959.

Re-check the serial# as Winchester was devoting all their resources to the war effort in 1945 and not making guns for the civilian market (M70 production resumed on Jan. 24, 1946). The rear bridge probably should not be d&t. Are the SG swivels still with the gun? If everything checks out $2300.00 is not really that out of line for an 85% gun although $2000.00 or so would be a lot more palatable.

The book says add 100% for a SG. I have seen SGs “sell” for 120% plus compared to a standard rifle. I have a pre war 06 and a 50s 257 Roberts in the SG version. After close inspection, they did put more effort into them. No flies on the standard model though. Got and use both.

Just re-checked, Winchester stopped recording M70 production from Nov. 1942 to Jan. 1946 and there are about 2,300 unrecorded serial #’s during this period. Your SG may fall in this serial # range. Pics would be helpful, but a pre-war gun is not likely to have a factory drilled and tapped rear bridge, especially with just a single hole.
The extra hole takes a lot of value and almost all collector interest from the gun

I know you are right, but every time I read something like this I always come away thinking "Wow, the collector world is harsh!" Good thing we aren't as judgmental on our women, or they on us! I guess I should be happy about what it does to reduce prices on a some great rifles.
