In 1986 Glock released its first pistol, the G17, in the United states. Since then it has achieved a massive following and a very loyal customer base. It was the first of its kind.
Since then others have joined the polymer frame ranks. First Smith and Wesson with the Sigma ( that was a flop) followed by Springfield arms buying the rights to the HS2000 from Croatia and then SIG, those are the major players. Now it seems every gun company offers a polymer frame pistol. S+W came out with the M+P line which is a much better answer to the Glock. Springfield has done a great job with its XD line.
Still, Glock had a substantial lead in that market for the better part of 12 years. It came out with different frames and different calibers covering the gambit of classes. First different frames for different rounds and then reducing dimensions for the concealed carry market. Then came the "Generations" 1-5. It seemed that each time Glock came out with a different variation the Glockophiles set off fireworks and lined up to worship at the alter of Gaston Glock and buy that new variation.
Regardless of what you think of Glock's, love them or hate them, you have to admit that their marketing has been par excellence. They developed a solid customer base in the police and civilian market and fed that base just the right amount at the right time.
So we've been through the different calibers. We've been through the different Generations. Now we see the "X" variations which is no more than the mixture of different parts into configurations. I find myself wondering is Glock has finally run through all the possible variations and there isn't anything more, no more real variations, coming down the pike.
The older I become the more I am convinced that the voice of honor in a man's heart is the voice of GOD.

Glock isn't going anywhere any time soon.
But Sig (as predicted by some really smart people) is the future. They made themselves a one-stop shop and it's going to take everyone else a looooong time to catch up at this point.
A very long time.

Good is good. I think you missed the point. The original Glock didn't need a redesign really. They marketed and fed that market like real pros.

They've seen the light +P and they're going to be real tough to knock down. Maybe even impossible at this point.

I saw my first Glock August of 1983. I was on a train from Germany to Yugoslavia. At the Austrian border, a Border Agent got on board to check passports. He was packing the coolest pistol I'd ever seen. Then and there I determined to find out what it was and own one if possible. Back in the states, I eventually found out it was a Glock G17. A year ago I got a Gen 5 Glock 19, a neat little pistol that only took me 35 years to acquire  That's a long way of answering the OP's question with - "I have no earthly idea, I just wanted to type a semi-related story."

A very long time. I agree Glock is still going to be a major player in the foreseeable future. Sig has also been a major player since the '80s and with them winning the US government pistol trials (which I think they should have won in '84) and with their "one stop shop" with rifles, ammo, optics, training and Etc. they are going to get huge. But don't completely count Smith and Wesson out they still have a large following and their pistols are arguably more ergonomic than most. They don't offer all the products that Sig offers but they have a full line of pistols and Ar-15 rifles and I thought some training also.

I'll tell you a Sig I would like to have, It is a Sig P210. I was sure tempted last year win the repop showed up.

I think Glock is as good as ever, maybe better. But I think consumers are becoming "bored" with them and experiment with other designs. I've trusted Glocks as my go-to hand gun for quite a number of years. But confess to trying out a Smith M&P in recent years and just ordered one of the Sig XM-17's just like issued to the military yesterday.
Most people don't really want the truth.

The "wow" factor is gone from Glock and Sig is trying hard to steal the show but I agree with the conversation about Smith and Wesson. They are trying hard to recapture the American gun buyers attention and money.
