Don't know if this has been posted? Call em lucky or whatever. He kept his head and sounds like a well conditioned dude.

He got lucky that the cat latched on his arm and didn't let go to try for the neck or head. Sounds like it was more wrestling match as he had time to grab sticks, a big rock and then get a foot over its neck and choke it out like an MMA fighter. Hell of a story and he did keep a cool head.

Fella is lucky it was a young cat.

Used to run those trails quite a bit. Lot of mule deer, never saw a cat. Would be surprised if one hadn’t seen me though.

It did try to go for the neck/face.... he got his arm up in front of it and that’s why the cat clamped on to it. It’s not a “wrestling match” when the opponent is armed with knives on every limb, and is fully intent on killing, then eating you.

This dude is a bad ass...

The trail where the attack happened is about 3 miles from my house.

Since the high Park fire in 2012 the whole forest has grown up tremendously. Large numbers of mule deer. Not unusual to see 20-30 a day just looking out the kitchen window. They even bed down under my deck. We also see lions, especially at night.

It's 4 miles to the hard road from my driveway and I have had them zip across the road or just walk ahead or my jeep head lights and then eventually jump to the side. Found a deer 75 yds from the house they were feeding on.

Pretty hard to hunt them with dogs as there are a lot of 40-100 acre lots and no way to control where the dogs might end up.

I have been thinking about getting some good mountain lion calls and try to get one. Electronic calls are not legal in Colorado. I took the on line video that is required to get a tag so I am good to go.

Got to be a little creepy out alone blowing on that call....

There is a fella out here that goes by Rainshadow, he has a web page and makes mouth calls for lions. Something I've wanted to do as well.

http://www.rain-shadow.com/prod03.htm

I came up on a big cat a few years ago in the snow. Super close. We stared at each other for a second and it lept into the air and disappeared. Actually had to look for tracks to even see what direction it went. That close, it looked HUGE. I'm 210-220#'s and I doubt it gave up much, if any, in weight.

Been kinda jazzed to hunt one since.

Amazing how many humans we see on the trails here in the Flathead wearing ear buds, music blaring.
Just a matter of time.

A lot of hiking trails which have deer around them also have mointain lion. Get off the trail 10 or 15 feet and look for tracks. You will find them.

A few comments about how he'll modify his time out in nature in the future... but nothing about being armed. Hmmm.

Actually, it seems he has proven rather well he doesn't need to be armed. The rest of us may not be quite so good, however.

I don't think he proved anything, other than that he could survive that one. Might not be so lucky next time.

I haven't seen an actual weight of the cat he killed. Saw reports of 80#, I'd bet an actual weight would be closer to 50.

Not that whoppin' even a #50 cat ain't a feat to be impressed by! Mean SOB's!

Not sure it'd help.

This cat launched at his face.
