60 grain Nosler partition’sI’m thinking about trying 60 grain Nosler partition’s in my 223. It’s a Remington 700 and I think the twist rate is 1 in 12. Will this stabilize the bullet,?.,,,, is anyone else used it ,,,,any recommendations on powder?

I dunno about the 12-twist being enough, but I like the way 25.5 of H4895 pushes it in one of my ARs.

We used it this past year. I think we used H4895. Granddaughter killed a couple of deer, but neither were pass through. The buck didn't go far, but no blood to track. Think we will go back to 53gr Triple Shocks this year.

I called Nosler when I got my bolt 223 - the 60 gr partition was designed for 1-12 minimum. As stated, won't stabilize in 1-14. max load of Benchmark, better than MOA.
SHot one deer, hit in the shoulder (too far forward); as stated, no blood trail, dead deer probably 40 yds from where I shot him.

RiverRider,

If I recall correctly from way back when the 60 Partition was introduced, it was designed for the .223's then-standard 1-12 twist.

Which is why it sometimes doesn't do too well in 1-14's....

Have you done much with the 60 Partition, John? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know.

I compared the lengths of a 60-grain Partition to a 53-grain Varmageddon a few minutes ago. The Partition is shorter.

RiverRider,

Have "field-tested" the 60 Partition some, on animals from prairie dogs to deer. It has always worked, including on a doe whitetail from a T/Contender Carbine in .22 Hornet I once owned, that for some reason had a (left-hand) 1-10 twist barrel. It also knocked the snot out of varmints in a Savage 99 .22 High Power with a 1-14 twist, though the load shot a lot better at higher elevations. It exited on the doe shot with the Hornet on a rib shot, perhaps because the bullet retained more weight when started at 2400 fps.

Have found the 60 Partition often shoots much better in a fast-twist barrel.

Killed somewhere around a dozen Midwest whitetail w a Partition in a 22-250, 12 twist. 1

Never kept one inside if a deer including my largest bodied buck to date, about 250# on hoof. Shot through both blades at about 15 yards, maybe a fuzz more. Bucks nose was in the dirt at the shot and he went maybe 50 yards.

I would shoot them in any .224 gun if I were to hunt with one again.

You want a Kick Ass bullet that even stabilizes in your slow twist 22 Centerfires? Try the Speer 70 grain .224 Diameter Semi Spitzer. I shoot it in my slow 1:14 twist .22-250 and it stablilizes fine. I don't know about the slower 22 CFs but my old .223 was 1:12 and it stabilized them fine out to 200 yards I know of. But in my opinion the Semi Spitzer isn't a handicap because you shouldn't be shooting deer with a .223 out past 200-300 yards anyway, because after about 300 yards no .223 has the energy of a dead Piss Ant. But I'm here to tell you, out to 200, maybe 300 yards they're the Beez Kneez. That was the only thing my old 1:12 twist .223's killed any deer with and it did great.

Both of my new .223s have 1:9 and 1:8 twists. So they will stabilize 60 grain up to 70-maybe 80 grain Spitzers. Well the 1:8 will stabilize 80 grainers. But I still prefer the Speer 70 Grain Semi Spitzer because it just performs so well.

I sincerely hope that you have better luck getting the 60 grain Partition to shoot than I have had. It has been one of two Partitions bullets that I have had to work hard with to find an accurate load, the other being the 125 grain .264" Partition.

The 64 grain Winchester/Olin Power Point is shorter and not as aerodynamic, but for me it has been an easy bullet to find an accurate load for in the 222, 223, 223 WSSM, and 22-250.

I was, in the past, not successful in shooting small groups with the 60 gr Partition. My rifle has a 9 twist barrel and shoots most everything well. So I decided to give the Partition another try since I had a bunch of the bullets. Tried several powders without much success, but when I used H335 I found a load that shoots great. Even better, it shoots to the same spot the 65 gr Sierra GK does. So now I can no longer grump about poor accuracy with that bullet. Killed a big hog with it recently, about 225 to 250 pounds. I didn’t find an exit, but I didn’t look that hard and didn’t do an autopsy.
