6a is a decent unit....up north.
Down south the roads are dang rough, as a matter of fact we pretty much stayed away from the southern part because it wasn’t as “elky” lol
My son ended up killing a 4pt off a tank midway in the unit.
Did see a giant antelope there too.
He was a hog.

Awesome. Congratulations to all involved.

I'm 79 and just did my first elk hunt here in NM. Hopefully, it will lure my son into taking the next one and sticking with it, since he came along and enjoyed it. wink

Thanks everyone. It was an amazing hunt. Not because of all the elk we seen, because we didnt see many, but because i got to spend it with my dad and see him kill. Also because it meant a lot to have my 2 buddies come up and help and only ask for beer in return smile
I was still skeptical of him using the 270 with 130gr interlock fb even tho guys who i respect their opinion said it was enough to do the job. Well they were right thats for sure. That bullet sure stopped him. Sure it wasnt a long shot, 100 yards or so, but it got him down.
Tom, coulda been the same one we seen if he was in the middle of the unit around the junipers. We seen a giant goat east of the maid.
Thanks again everyone.
God bless

Took my 75yo father elk hunting in october. He drew a CHAMP tag here in az. Hes old, banged up, cant walk far but still has the want to to hunt altho his body says it cant. After 2 days and 1 early morning drive, i got to see my old man harvest his first elk and possibly only elk. It was something i cant explain and something that will live with me till my dying days and beyond. Road hunting for elk is tough, not easy to elk hunt from a road but these CHAMP hunts sure do help some. He did try walking some and we maybe logged half mile if that on foot in the time we were there. But still by elk hunting standards that was not much. We were blessed to have this one to harvest as we had other opportunities but were unable to make it work due in large part to his limited mobility.
Anyways here is a pic, i hope it works. If not you can find it in the image gallery lol
Hes a 6x7, not huge, but the meat sure is great!

Don’t stop there. Your dad won’t be around forever. I wish I had asked my dad more questions and recorded his comments. He died when he was 94 and we got him out hunting at 92. He shot his last deer at 91.

No amount of money will buy back the time you don’t spend with your father...

Exactly.

Cudos to the OP and his Dad. That's the stuff memories are made of.

The one we saw was slightly north east of horse mountain.
