How is it we can be this deep into a thread and the 223 has been completely overlooked?
223 with Partitions or Nosler Bonded will wreck a deer. What thread were you reading? 223 was mentioned multiple times. There may have been a bit of sarcasm in my post.

In the spirit of the thread I'll recommend the .219 Donaldson Wasp. Because the .223 is too easy of an answer and too sensible and those are both good reasons to overlook it. moosemike, I had 219 Zipper built on a Stevens 44 1/2 action, for many years, topped with an old, but nice Unertl, back when we had woodchucks hereabouts. That rifle would routinely keep 5 shots inside an inch at 200 yards. Sadly, I let it go. It would be a neat solution to my current problem.
Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years. It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone..... Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.

It would do the job. Marlin made 336's in .219 Zipper in the mid to late 50's. I used to look high and low for one. My buddy from NY found one but I never did. This was pre Gunbroker and all that. People didn't know what they were back then and if you found one it was often cheap.

I would love to know the conditions which you shoot deer with a .223.. It will work, but for all deer hunting I have my doubts.. I am sure most of the deer are shot over bait , or the political correct food plots... But in the rough and tumble world of public deer hunting with shots at moving deer, deer in tall weeds or brush, or late evening shots it is not for me.. Some states like W. Va. when I hunted there it would work fine.. We hunted private land, with lots of deer and no others hunters... Cross the line to the area we hunted it Pa.. Deer were pressured, shots at deer were from 50 yards to 400. late evening shots were common.. No thanks, I want more rifle... I am sure Steelhead's one liners will disagree, but I simply do not favor a rifle this light for all around deer hunting.. I have used lots of .22's from the Hornet to the ,22 Cheetah.. and I will use them again, but conditions have to be right.. What range and angle do you think would not be “enough” with the cartridge and bullet that caused the above-

That looks like the results when I shoot "em at 30 yds.
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

What was the shot angle? What was the deer doing when it was shot?

110 yards, quartering to, chasing a doe, and he went approx. 31-32 feet after the shot on his face straight downhill. No blood trail needed, however it was 2-3 feet long swaths around 4-6” wide- in other words spectacular. 300’ish IRRC, broadside, feeding, collapsed at the shot. I’ve only personally shot just into the three digits on deer, and seen around double that shot with me beside the shooter with 22 cal centerfires on WT’s, Mule deer and elk, and somewhere in the hundreds with other calibers, so you’re experience killing may be more with .224’s than mine. However, having used it in 9-10 states on public land from Florida to Idaho, there’s isn’t a deer walking in any condition, of any size, or I any terrain that I would even give a thought to with the 77gr TMK, 75gr or 88gr ELD-M, 75gr GD, 75gr SC II, or one or two others. I’ve yet to experience a rodeo from anyone using .224’s. The same con not be said for any bigger rounds.

For God’s sake, just give the man a free floated AR or a Montana in.223 and some 64gr. Powerpoints and send him out to kill chit. Problem solved. All this mental mastubation over a simple problem with an easy solution. And I wonder if some have ever shot what they are suggesting for the man to use...
