Anyone know what the regs are for using snares in CA? Are they even allowed?

What is it you are going after. If yotes that is one thing, if for trapping furbearing animals totally different.

no furbearing animals of any sort. Just rabbits and ground squirrels playing hell with parents' garden. They are getting to be of age where it is too bothersome to put real effort into gettting rid of them. Snares look safe, cheap,and easy for them to handle.

Snares would be one of the toughest ways to deal with those animals. I would buy them 2 cage traps (rabbit size) and a few death clutch or similar gopher type traps and they won't have a rodent problem for very long.
