Probably the Marlin 39.
I've never held a Winchester 1873 in 22 LR, but that might be a neat option.

The Marlin is well thought of, but my personal choice is the now discontinued Winchester 94-22. I've owned several in the past and presently have one in the legacy model, with pistol grip. My all-time favorite! Virgil B.

In this order...
Marlin M39A Winchester 94/22 Browning BL22
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

If it's accuracy your looking for take a look at the Henry H-001. If they all shoot like mine you can't go wrong. I have 5 .22's and it may be the best shooter, that includes a Ruger 10/22 with a bull barrel and sporter stock.

Have a 39A, and just ordered a BL22 Grade II Octagonal.
But hands down the best I've ever shot was with an old Ithaca single shot lever gun model 49.

+ a bunch on the Marlin 39's. I had one in the early 1950's and I loved it. What a great little rifle. Nostalgia..... Don

Look for a Winchester model 250, similar design to a Savage 99, has a tube feed. Accurate, lighter than a 39A, and great shooters.
The 39A and 9422 are also great choices. Henry makes great products too, just not high on my list. Sold my .22 and Big Boy .44, very heavy, good shooters.
Good luck

i was wondering what is the best lever action 22 long in your opinion Someone has missed the obvious and maybe it's me. The best lever action .22 long, (or short or long rifle) is the Winchester 94-22. They are scarce and may become scarcer but, if the $$ don't scare you off, they are available.

I'm actually looking at one NIB. Anybody have extensive experience with these? I don't need great accuracy as it would be more for plinking with open sights as I have .22 lr's for when great accuracy is needed.
A golf course is a sad misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.

Have owned 1 standard 22 from the early 70's when the first came out. In the mid-70's an XTR in 22 lr. Then 2 94-22, 22 mags. in the late 70's. Then a 94-22 Trapper. Presently have a 94-22 LR in the Legacy. Yep, they have all been great shooting guns! ( wish I had some of the others back) Virgil B.

I have two in .22Mag that I shoot and a .22 S,L,LR that has never been shot since leaving the factory. Still looking for more but gettin' eaten up by the price hikes.
They are smoother than butter and mine shoot as good or better than any other .22's we have. And we've got a few.

Was at a gun show in Eugene, Or. last week-end. Saw a Win. 94-22 Legacy like mine for sale at the asking price of $700. If a guy wants a Winchester, better buy it soon.... Virgil B.
