Do those of you who use Talley ring mounts lap them? I usually do on most all my steel rings, but did not really know on the aluminum Talley's. I would not want to take very much.

Talley says you don’t have to, but you’ll find some folks do.

I always do. Maybe overkill? I don’t know. But none of my scopes have ring rash and they never slip.

I'm not a fan of TLW's, but when I use them, I lap them. The lower halves almost always have have a slight pinch point (ears sprung closed toward the top). It's my understanding Melvin designed them this way. I lap them so the scope tube slips in without any binding, marring, etc. I'm careful to relieve any sharp edges. Then I use Birchwood Casey's Alumablack on any bare aluminum. Finally, I lightly dust the top and bottom ring to scope tube mounting surfaces with powder rosin.
