He put many, many more bullet holes in bad guys (plus a few women) and in boot hill than wounded him:

How Many Men did Marshal Dillon Kill in the Gunsmoke Series?

Quote

During the 20-year span of CBS’s Gunsmoke series, the count ranges from 138 men and seven women to 303 people. If you add in the ones U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon capped in the made-for-TV movies, the total is 407.

Some of those bad guys might have only been wounded, and some might have died of their wounds later.

Apparently Matt even got "lucky"once:

Did you know that Matt Dillon had a kid on ‘Gunsmoke’?

So did he ever "tap" Kitty or not?

I've been recording and watching on Dish Network for a couple years. I'm not sure all the seasons will ever be available. Ran out of newer ones a long time ago.

Rockinbar, you are certainly correct. As you knew Jim at that time, I am sure you know that in the last few years of the show, Jim could do almost no horse back riding due to his WW II injuries. He would mount his horse, start to ride away, then the camera would do a cutaway and the next time you saw "Matt" riding out, galloping or whatever, it was his stunt double doing the hard riding. Seems German machine gun bullets can do that to a man. shocked

Jim Arness was a very nice man, one of the best in Hollywood.

Were youi working on the show??

No sir, that was a bit before my day.

Knew Jim, Buck Taylor and Ken Curtis through the YO Ranch in Kerrville, where they frequented. Later, I did a movie with Buck and Jim. That's where Jim and I got to be pretty good friends. At least we had some good visits.. And I'm richer for having known him.

Burt Kennedy was a gem too.

I remember the Gunsmoke radio program.

The radio program came on Sunday evenings; I can remember it mainly because of "Cannon's" distinctive voice.

Rockinbar, sounds like you had a good time working with those people. They're all gone now except Buck Taylor, and he's beginning to get a little long in the tooth, also. (Aren't we all? wink ) I was acquainted with Burt Kennedy but he never directed any of my shows.

I alway enjoyed Glenn Strange's character. A distinctive face behind the bar as Sam. Saw him in another movie one time playing a heavy and couldn’t believe. Also won a few bar bets back in the day with Ken Curtis’ singing. Festus had a great voice singing in the big band era.

Thanks for the post! A great read and can’t imagine a time in the future when that caliber of men work in Hollywood again. Great memories of watching that show with my grandfather, as a kid.
