You would think the article would have at least mentioned the cartridge and caliber or the bullet fired "sprayed" by this evil rifle.

Her intention was to turn it in for destruction. I didn't say it was destroyed.

I’m just shocked that the ant-gun bastards there didn’t arrest the old woman on the spot for having a unregistered machine gun.

Had a old vet bring in a pristine Beretta made Carcano at the Pawn Shop I ran in the early 90’s. Bought it fir $50 and gave it to Dad for his WWII collection.
Box of Norma ammo I ordered for him cost me as much as the damn rifle.

She obviously had no clue about what it was and the value. So the way I read it she will get the proceeds from the sale ? She ought to and if that's the case then I commend the cops for telling her what it was and handling it the way they should have. I've heard tales of elderly widows turning in that pistol their late husband brought back from WW2 and put in the closet and getting 50 or 75 bucks for and it was a very nice Luger or P-38 and somehow those guns sometimes don't wind up with the other junk that got turned in for destruction. Funny how that works.

We had an STG44 turned in locally as well a few years ago. I'm sure it was turned into scrap metal.

............... Maybe..... Maybe not.... Back in the 90's I worked at a hazardous waste incinerator for a few years. We occasionally did gun and drug burns for different police dept's. The guns were sealed up in fiber drums and that's how they went in so we couldn't see 'em before they went in. But there were lots of cops there as they had to watch those drums every inch of the way so nobody could open one and steal something. I used to talk to them about the guns and based on what I heard it was the cheap stuff off the street and the worn out junk that gets turned in at gun buy backs. Many times valuable guns in good shape never made it to the incinerator from what I gathered. There may be a way to legally divert some of that, perhaps? I doubt that piece of WW2 German militaria would have made it all the way to whatever destruction method was planned for all the other buy back guns, even if they just paid her for it and said "we'll destroy it".

Dad worked in a steel mill for 25 years. There were several occasions when the Feds would bring a load of firearms in to be melted down in the electric arc furnaces. Dad said that EVERYTHING went into the furnace including the nice firearms.

Claimed that one foreman pulled a nickel plated revolver out of the stack and told the Fed OIC that it had too much nickel or chromium in it for the heat they were melting. OIC took the revolver from the foreman, tossed it in the furnace, and impolitely told the foreman to back off.

I'm surprised that foreman even had a chance to see that revolver but that's probably how they did it back then. Where I worked in the 90's gun burns were called "Observed Burns" meaning that every gun container is watched by a cop from the time they are unloaded off the truck that brought them until they enter the air lock before going into the kiln. Every inch of the way has a cops eye on it and the guns were all inside of fiber drums that were all sealed up with tape so we couldn't even see them and with no chance of opening one just to see the contents (darn it). I believe nowadays all stuff like drugs & guns that get incinerated goes in like that so nobody can even see it let alone get their hands on it. Drug burns were also the same way for obvious reasons.
