So, I have a couple of custom made 50x beaver felt hats. One is a Fedora style and the other is a Gus style.
I also have a Gus style palmetto.

I'm looking at purchasing another hat. I don't want to pay the price that I paid for the custom made hats.
But I don't want a cheaply made hat either. I've been looking at "Akubra" hats from the land down under also.

What is your favorite hat ? Straw ? Palmetto ? Felt ? And why ?

Maybe a classic Cattleman style ? or maybe a Ranch Hand style ?

What say you ?

Akubra makes nice hats, but they tend to shrink quite a bit. More than others in my opinions. Felt or straw is a function of the weather.

Felt when it's cool, straw when it's hot.

Check Sunbody hats.
Akubra are good hats and Everything Australian are good folks. I have ordered a hat they had in stock on Thursday evening and had it at my house in Mississippi on Tuesday several times.

Depends on weather and your personal tolerance for heat/cold.

I don't wear a hat much anymore. Have a few custom made hats by a local hatter.

For straws I like palm leaf hats. They hold up to abuse better.

I wouldn't buy a hat off the shelf at most places because most places don't have the selection.

As to style, that's very personal as well. I will say there's nothing like seeing a rube wearing a buckaroo style or something like a Tom Mix style.

My favorite straws are Sunbody, they have a very effective sweatband, far better than leather. Non custom felts are stetson and American. If you have a western store available go try some, hats are like shoes in that fit is everything. I would never buy a serious hat w/out trying it on. A good hat adds value to time outdoors.

Go to a good hat store (Arizona Hatters in Tucson is one of my favorites) and try several styles until you find one you like. I always take my wife with me, as she has a better eye for what looks good on my than I do. For summer, I like Panama straws and for winter, good felt Stetson.

Akubras are one of my favs. But I wear a lot of vintage stuff because I have a small ( but mighty) cranial capacity!
6 7/8 to a 7. So I can find stuff cheap! I wear felt. I do have straw reenacting hats. But you wouldn’t wear one in public.

Latest reenacting chapeau. 1790-1820 Round Hat

$15 Akubra vintage slouch ( no puggaree) off ebay. Fur felt.

(Holding a recent find by one of my hunting buds. Circa 1840’s perc. German Jäger. Been in same family on Fredericksburg Tx. Since their arrival in 1846).

For work, an Atwood Hereford low crown 5x palm leaf.

http://atwoodhats.com/hats/palmleaf/

Worn one for years...

For dress, a black Stetson 10X Premier.

I'll crease them myself. Hat creasing is becoming a lost art, as most hats now are pre-shaped.

I remember when they used to come uncreased, both straw and felt.

I've creased hats for many people. The crease sets you aside from everyone else.

You can tell who is a "real cowboy" at a glance by how a man creases his hat. wink

You are the one that's sad though. And please quit paying so much attention to my jeans... That's kinda homo-like. Even for you.
