I liked them both, maybe Roth the best even though he got drunk, bad drunk & spoiled a 1980 Invasion tour concert for me. The first time I heard running with the devil I was driving & it caught my attention enough that I had to pull over so I could just listen to my car stereo with no distractions.. Saying, what the heck is this?
Listening to Van Hagar tonight on the radio & thinking, Sammy did a pretty good job too, No complaints here.
I used to be totally David Lee Roth but now I really can appreciate Sammy's efforts with the band as well. I resented the switch to Hagar for many years though.
I like both. Eddie threw away most of his talent on heroin & coke. And took the band down with him.
"Allways speak the truth and you will never have to remember what you said before..." Sam Houston Texans, "We say Grace, We Say Mam, If You Don't Like it, We Don't Give a Damn!"
I like them both. I was a Van Halen fan and a Hagar fan before they got together. The music with Roth was a little more raw and seemed to advance with Hagar.
Tough to choose as the era's are so different to me but I would lean towards Van Hagar. (I even liked the Gary Cherone album.) It pains me to see what they are now. Sammy and Michael seem to be getting the last laugh.
My uncle has been a lead guitar player in a rock band since about 1973. My dad drove the equipment van for them through the 80’s. No coontunes allowed nor wanted growing up, country sucks too. I probably have more rocknroll trivia floating around my head than most guys who were there.

Wow, I hear you Loud & clear. If my memory of the times or details were better I'd love to swap trivia with you. But when you said; less glam, more grit & rock, I knew you knew.
