About to join the ranks of the septuagenarians in a month or so, I spent some time today thinking how the cultural and political landscape has changed in my adult lifetime.

The point of my January 2017 article in American Thinker is unfortunately proving to be more and more true. As a nation now so highly divided by disparate views we can no longer come together with civility and compromise to solve on-going, chronic problems; this is all the more evident now two and a half years later. In fact, we cannot all even agree on what the problems are. Traditionally, our two parties generally generally held political goals in common differing in the ways to achieve them. Now, the goals not only differ, they are even radically opposed to each other. The Democrats, driven hard-left in the last half-century have rejected the American tradition of pluralism and traded it in for a rolling revolution.

Though they lost the White House to Trump and conservatives, the radicalized Democrats have really been winning one issue after another since Roe v Wade in 1973 with “changing America” the conscious and intended goal in mind. Energized by the radical feminists and other far left elements to slowly but successfully change the social order, politicians, cultural and church leadership in the ‘60’s, ‘70’s, ‘80’s and on, fearful of the misogyny, homophobic, and racist labels raised mostly faint and ineffective voices.

But in 2017 and on, the Democrats have added a new layer of disbelief-inspired hatred, vitriol, and intrigue (the Mueller affair) for Trump and his base. This tops off their already moral and political distance from those living in the wilderness between NYC and LA not to mention their utter and complete disdain for the “cargo shorts and flip-flop ‘class’”.

Presently, their 2020 presidential candidates continue to have no real ideas; no creditable policy proposals, and no reasonable answers to the major problems facing us; just the same adherence to a cultural Marxism behind ridiculous “victim”-pandering promises..and their facility for lying is unmatched; it seems to such a handy device and often works. Last week, Joe Biden told an Iowa crowd — more like a small gathering — that one thing he is proud of is that there was not a hint of scandal or lying during the eight years of the Obama-Biden administration.

Those Iowans should have been highly offended at Biden’s truth-appropriation either because they wasted their time listening to a glib, old guy who didn’t know what he was talking about, or they knew he knew it was a ridiculous lie but didn’t think the stupid Iowans would know any differently. The other option of course is that Biden and the Democrats have reached a level of postmodern relativism wherein they believe in their version of Field of Dreams: “if I say it, it will be true,” Of course his listeners were Democrats, who apparently hold to “if they say it, it must be true.” Maybe the deplorable irredeemables in fly-over country should refer to the Democrat candidates as perjurious prevaricators. The fact that the Democrat Party has lost its moral compass in a lifetime — ours — does not bode well for our nation.

President Trump, neither an intellectual or a member of the presiding political culture or class, should at face-value, win a second term in 2020 barring anything unforeseen which is not something to be taken for granted. But considering how unhinged the Left became the first time what then might we expect next? Would it prove to be an existential threat to the Democrat Party, or...would they roll-out and foment another coup attempt? And what kind of candidate will eventually arise from the mostly laggard Republican Party after the remarkable success of a true political-class aberration who they barely lifted a finger for?

It’s not that the feckless Republicans instill any degree of confidence but considering how the Democrat Party now operates and what it has become, there is not one — not even the local dog-catcher — I’d pull the lever for in 2020.

For the read-only lurkers here who might go spastically apoplectic and feel the need to go to their safe place, yes, get a history book and read it. Not a new history book but an old one that covers America’s founding.

The democrat party went off the rails in 1972 with the nomination of George McGovern and the rational democrat became extinct with the death of Hubert Horatio Humphrey. It seems they did not just go off the rails, but they made their departure at a speed beyond escape velocity and are no longer on planet Earth...maybe not even in this solar system anymore.

You are so right! Maybe. just maybe the electoral college will let us in "fly over" country have a voice. The Democrat party is made up of a conglomeration of left wing loonies. I just wish that the politicians would be interested in doing the Nations work.

I am holding on to the belief that the Democratic party circular firing squad will evolve into a bloodbath by convention time and the nominee will result in such a low voter turn out that the Donald might just have a chance.

The left, democrats, liberals, communist, socialist, islamites, the news media, and globalist want power/control of the American people. They hate Americans, the Constitution, and the USA. They are all enemies and traitors of America. They are using immigration/illegals to change the demographics of our once great nation. Globalists are turning it into a 2nd rate country they can control. That is the end game! Educated Christians which can think and have guns cannot be controlled by government.

You are focusing on the fringes while the big show is happening center stage.

George De Vries, well spoken. Please expound further. The differences are irreconcilable I think. So, a Balkan style split? Outright civil insurrection? A commonwealth style split? We can't live together, so how will the divorce look?

Democrats leading up to primaries = kicking a bag of pit vipers down a stairwell.

Democrats are out to win by any means this time. The left, democrats, liberals, communist, socialist, islamites, the news media, and globalist want power/control of the American people. They hate Americans, the Constitution, and the USA. They will cheat, steal, lie, and kill for the power they want.

And delivers them well.

The average voter in this country does not pay any attention to the news, and if by chance they do, it's more than likely from someplace like CNN. They are only interested in themselves, and see no need to concern themselves with actually broadening their horizons by looking at what's really going on around them. That's why Hillary got half the vote. They don't care what's going on at the Mexican border, they don't care that America is increasingly becoming a welfare state, their Second Amendment rights mean nothing to them, and they are perfectly satisfied to have someone telling them what to do, and when to do it, in other words, they've lost the ability to think for themselves.

That's why the Demoncrats win.......their voters don't care who and what their candidates are, they are only concerned about being taken care of. It doesn't matter if Biden, Edwards, Harris, or any of the other candidates is known liar, it just matters that they'll continue the Democrat practice of giving their voters a reward for voting for them.

It's been estimated that only 17% to 20% wanted to kick the Brits out in `1776 seems they did pretty good job getting things started.
