Hello, I have on old 54 that had the old safety changed to a Buehler and I would like to go one better and use an old Tilden side type safety to make it more period like and still use a scope. Does anyone know what is involved in changing to that? cocking piece , bolt sleeve besides having the safety? Do you know if a Model 70 sleeve or safety would work? Looking for long lost information and parts. Thanks Ron

Have seen a few Model 54 Winchesters with transition a Model 70 Safety. The length of the bolt and strikers are not identical on both models so this is not a do it yourself / drop in project. I am guessing that the factory would make the witch back in the 1940's - 1950's.
The Tilden Safety was made to replace the pre- war M70 safety and it operated like the current safety.
Good Luck.

I had my Pre64 apart the other day to see what would interchange with it, firing pin, spring and sleeve screw right on to ithe 54 bolt but the tip protrusion needed bit of work. The 64 has more of a speedlock to its firing pin and my 54 was supposed to have a speedlock showing the serial number with the A on it but someone thru time changed it out for the 2 piece pin. I believe with a little work the internals of the 64 would work, I did not have a caliper long enough to get accurate measurements of the parts so I need a longer indicator first. thanks for your input 30Gibbs. Ron
